Who'd come right up and introduce your dad like that, without first prepping Littlefoot for the shock, first?
I still find it very plausible that Littlefoot's Dad just didn't know the way to the Great Valley. Not all the dinos did. Littlefoot's mother had to remind him, remember? And, sometimes, in desperation and grief, people don't think straight. The most obvious answer is not always the most obvious. I've seen things like that happen to a person.
