I get the feeling that that's how the writers intended it. Plus they seemed to show more affection to Littlefoot's mohter(eg, grandpa nuzzling her after Litttlefoot's birth) than they do to Bron. If they had been HIS parents, I think their reunion in lbt X would have been more tearful
