LBT's Wikipedia article

by Noname (no login)

Has anyone seen the LBT article on wikipedia? It is very short and could use expanding. For such a long series, it is underrepresented in the online encyclopedia. Since it is an open, online encylopedia, anyone can edit the entries. Perhaps I or some other member of the forum should make additions...

Mistakes in that article

by (no login)

Remarkably there are two obvious mistakes in the article. The sharptooth in the original movie is named a carnosaur. That term however describes a group of meateating dinosaurs whose most famous representative would be Allosaurus. T-Rex (and the original movie's sharptooth was a T-Rex for sure) was not part of this group.
Ducky is said to be a Corythosaurus. This is definitely wrong. Corythosaurus was a species with a kind of semicircular crest on their head. If my memory doesn't fail me their species is the one which is named "hollowhorns" in LBT 8. They are definitely not Ducky's kind.
Ducky's species is still a matter of discussion. She has often been named an Anatosaurus. However, Anatosauruses, unlike Ducky, had no crest at all. She has been named a Parasaurolophus, but in that case her crest would have to a lengthening of the bridge of her nose. Moreover we see young Parasaurolophuses in LBT 4 and they look nothing like Ducky. I suppose she is a Saurolophus, a species resembling Parasaurolophus but with a smaller crest.

A very interesting topic Noname! I have to admit I never checked out Wikipedia for land before time before.

Hollowhorn, bigmouth, swimmer, what?

I believe that the hollowhorns are Parasaurolophus and that Ducky is a Saurolophus. Remember, Ducky first introduced herself as a "bigmouth."

Yet another name for Ducky's kind?

by (no login)

There may be yet another name for Ducky's kind mentioned in LBT 2. Maybe my ears are playing a trick on me (so please do correct me if I am mistaken) but when they are meeting on the rock at night it sounds like Cera says: "Don't hang around with longnecks, big-faces, and spiketails!"
Big-faces sound actually like "big-bases". Neither version seems to make too much sense. Ducky doesn't have a very big face, but then again it is similar to big-mouth. I would be grateful if somebody could tell me for sure what Cera says in that scene.

Hi hewlewis!
Welcome to the land before time forum.
As for your story, well, I have to admit that it sounds very much like a combination about all aspects of a land before time story I wouldn't like. I prefer land before time stories which stick to the limits set by the original movie and the early sequels. Time travels, WWII, nuclear bombs... quite frankly I don't think that any of this has any business in the land before time. However, there are land before time fans who are likely to like that kind of story.

Sue's psychic abilities

by (no login)

As I watched LBT X just a short while ago, I saw the scene where Sue says, "I bet you folks are out here for the same reason as me," and I thought to myself, "Is Sue psychic? Here she is with three--just three--longnecks, who apparently haven't told her anything about the sleep story, and she guesses why they came out here." After all, there's nothing unusual about a migrating longneck. Just ask Doc.

Sue would have supposed that Grandpa, Grandma, and Littlefoot were just wanderers.

The sleep story I suppose

by (no login)

Hi!
I strongly suppose that there must have been something special about that sleep-story of the longnecks. Something that made everyone who had that dream anticipate what was going on. I generally dislike that idea of a dream having that strong an effect, but it is the only explanation I could come up with.
Remarkably though that every longneck (excluding at least parts of Bron's herd, Ali's herd, and Doc) headed for that place in the middle of nowhere, while very few seemed to know about the whole solar eclipse thing.

Dink

by (no login)

Sadly I have never seen any Dink movie (I doubt they were ever released in Germany). Looking at the date of the first Dink movie's release (1989) I think it is safe to assume that it was at least partly made because of the dinomania the land before time had triggered. However, having not seen any of the movies myself and with at least some of them being released prior to the LBT sequels (I don't know all the Dink release dates), I cannot judge to what degree Dink needs to be labeled a rip-off.

Flap the pteranodon was always going on about some uncle of his he looked up to only the uncle wasn't a bad guy like Pterano and he appeared in an episode it is a lot like the Land Before Time sequals except less singing and dancing.

Inspiration the other way round

by (no login)

Hi!
There is very little information to be found about dink on the internet. However, as apparently all the (more than 20) sequels were released before LBT 2, it seems quite likely, that not dink ripped off from LBT, but perhaps it was the other way round. I can hardly judge this as I never saw any dink movie and the internet provides only a few one or two sentence summaries. Still it sounds like some ideas were adopted by LBT.

Actually, "Dink: The Little Dinosaur" was a TV show.

by Drew L. (no login)

The story behind "Dink" is that someone wanted to do a "Land Before Time" TV series, but couldn't, so "Dink" was invented to substitute.

It was actually a very enjoyable show, I just wanted to see what everyone thought.

Why is it, that on this board, Malte is the only one who pays my posts any respectible heed these days?

Dink, availability, and posters

by (no login)

Was it by someone who had originally planned to start an LBT TV series? That's interesting. I do not know about the success of Dink, but it may be that if it was successful it was an important point for the decision to create LBT sequels.
I'm getting interested in that series. Yet it was never released on DvD, was it? If the movies are available on videos only this would make things much more complicate as American videos won't work in European players.
Don't take it personal Drew L. Perhaps many people are gone over the weekend. I don't think that anyone is totally disinterested in this topic which (unlike you wrote in the original post) seems to be quite on topic as far as I'm concerned.

Probably.

by Drew L. (no login)

One thing I will say is that the show was very similar to the original LBT movie. Very similar.

Dink: A little brontosaurus who behaves A LOT like Littlefoot. Although, he did often be more sensibel than Littlefoot, oddly.

Amber: (A biped close relation to the "swimmer", you know, the one with the bone mohawk thing on the top of its head. I can't remember the species' name!) Same basic personality as Cera, but A LOT nicer.

And, I can't remember the other names, but their Flyer was a lot like Petrie, but with the ability to use grammar correctly and he also was something of a braggard, unlike Petrie.

They didn't hav a Ducky, but they did have a shy little Stegosaurus and hyper little biped-crocodile thing.

They also came complete with their own "Chomper" for two episodes. Yes, you read that right. TWO EPISODES. And LBT's Chomper was in two sequels. Hmm. It looks like the sequels actually took a little inspiration from the series.

And I believe they also had some bullies, but I don't think they were a trio.

And the equivalence of their "grown-ups" was one old cranky turtle.

Hi

comparing Littlefoot and Dink? Simple:

Littlefoot and Dink are both the main character and brontosaurusses.
Cera and Amber are both girls and the second main character.
Ducky and Shyler are both sweet little dinosaurs.
Petrie and Flapper are both pterosaurs.
And Spike and Scat... well, big and small?

look up the company name rose sphere thats who made dink. Id had a shortish run around 18 episodes over 2 years it may have been a little more than that but not much. It was a copy cat of the original land before time. To the best of my knowlage no one involved with land before time was in any way involved with dink the little dinosaur. Might try askign don bluth through ask us link on donbluth.com. My bet is your only recorse to get these eps would be through maybe bit torrent but im guessing that would be nothing but dead ends as well. I for my part do not think that fighting and excercising violence does say anything about who is to be considered "better" (and in general I don't think that characters with all their positive and negative (and maybe nevertheless lovable) characteristics can be described with so generalizing terms as "better"). If it was that way, why do people not love the sharptooth who killed Littlefoot's mother?
And I'm quite sure Littlefoot wouldn't fight with anybody just to be named "better".

by Drew L. (no login)

Anyway, I'd have to say that "The Land Before Time" is better, because its original film is what started everything, and whereas "Dink" (which was very good, actually) was inspired by it, it does not have that classic film in its universe. Although I'd have to say that the entire TV series "Dink" was much better than the recent sequels, if not all the sequels.

I don't really agree

by (no login)

I can't speak for Dink, having never seen any Dink movie, but I really can't imagine Littlefoot to fight for being the top-dog (or rather top-dinosaur) of a group. While we accept Littlefoot as a kind of "leader" as most of the spotlight in the movies is on him, I'm not sure if Cera, Ducky, Petrie, and Spike (and Littlefoot too), would think of their friendship as hierarchicaly structured. Littlefoot does make many of the decisions for the group, but it is up to the others to decide whether to do what he suggests or not; Littlefoot is not ordering the others around against their will.
In LBT 6 he walks of by himself and the others follow only to save him from the trouble he got himself into.
In LBT 7 he is unquestionable the "speaker" of the decision to pursue the flyers, but Spike is the one who really goes ahead.
In LBT 8 we have Ducky and Spike acting rather independently from Littlefoot.
In LBT 9 he surely makes the decision to bring Mo back to big water leaving Cera, who was the only one who might have objected, no real chance to contradict.
The list goes on and there are many cases in which really Littlefoot decides what to do, but usually the others agree only if they feel like it, not just because Littlefoot wants them to.
The original movie provides the best examples for Littlefoot not desiring to pose himself above the others (Cera in particular). Rather than leaving Cera to the embarassment that she couldn't get food by himself he drops some leafes on her, making her think that it was her who shook the leaves down from a tree. The others followed him mainly because he knew the way to the Great Valley, and they stopped following him when they felt Cera's way was easier.
In LBT 2 we have Littlefoot tell Cera: "No one is making you come Cera!"
While the others often accept a kind of leadership role of Littlefoot I'm quite sure that Littlefoot wouldn't fight over it. The others either agree with him, or they don't and that is that. A friendship can be one of two friends on the same eye-level. I don't think Littlefoot wants to dominate others, not to mention use violence to achieve this.

Your idea of a leader

by Sebastian (no login)

I don't know what your idea of a leader is. Mine isn't that a leader force his group to anything. A leader just mostly is taken the initiative and the responsibility (For goodness, my English is so bad, forgive me!).
You see, a leader isn't a bad one. Just because human leaders act like little gods, that doesn't mean Dinosaurs do. Except Cera. She's vice-leader

I admit that I certainly grew up with a less positive conotation to the word "leader" than most people from other countries. Nevertheless if the desire for being the leader would drive two characters like Littlefoot and Dink (whom I don't suppose to be any less goodnatured and peaceful) to actually attack each other physically as you suggested I don't really think that even under a more objective perspective it can be considered a very positive thing.

Just enter "Dink dinosaur" at the google picture search and you will end up with a couple of pictures of Dink and some of his fellow dinosaurs. Regretably I never got a chance to watch any of the dink movies. Their production was probably inspired by the original land before time movie. Nevertheless I don't think they were land before time rip offs as they were produced BEFORE the land before time sequels. In fact I suppose much of the land before time may have been inspired by Dink the dinosaur. Voice actors from Dink the dinosaur later performed in the land before time too to begin with.

Recently I got hold of a land before time spoon with a handle shaped like Spike. Here are two pictures of it: the spoon enabled me to create a tin figure of Spike as shown on the next picture: Now I assume that the spoon was part of a set given out by some cereal or whatsoever, and I suppose that there must be others with handels in the shape of Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky and Petrie. Sadly I didn't get the slightest hint on who produced that kind of spoons. Does anyone of you know?

Perhaps you could start a collection of LBT paraphernalia. Then, if you ever get "too old" for LBT, sell the stuff to a diehard fan. It could be a rare item worth $$$ (of course in your case it would be euros...)

Who do these artifacts belong to? You could buy them for the purpose mentioned above.

I have no information on who made these spoons. Ask the folks at Universal Studios' licensing department.

The spoon's origin and other LBT stuff

by (no login)

I AM a diehard fan and I'm not looking for LBT stuff to sell it! I'm just after those spoons as they would enable me to create more tin figures in the likeness of the Spike above.
Meanwhile I found out that the spoons were produced for Dairy Queen Restaurants by the time LBT 5 was released. I also found out that indeed other than Spike there were spoons in the shape of Littlefoot, Cera, and Ducky.
Yet I never found any of those at ebay and the one of Spike I also got by chance rather than through a planned search. I'm especially after stuff of which one can make land before time tin figures. Other than the Spike spoon, I also have two 1988 brooches of Littlefoot and Ducky of which I created tin molds. I strongly assume that there were such brooches of other characters as well, but I never found any

I got the other sppons :-)

I'm happy to say that I succeded in finding and wining the other spoons at Ebay. The spoons of Ducky and Cera will make as good positives for tin figures as the one of Spike did. The Littlefoot spoon is not as good (he is in a strange sitting posture and his head seems a bit too small).

promos?

by (no login)

They were most likely given out as a promo. For a future episode perhaps?

Spoons

by Littlefoot-1616 (no login)

Hey guys!

I'd probably imagine that the spoons were available as a promotional offer whilst LBT was around and about on video at the time. Cant c ne otha reason than that really. R the Diary Queen Restaurants an American firm? The last promotional offer we had ova here was a Littlefoot cuddly toy which you got 4 buying LBT 9 video (dont think it was available 4 the DVD but I mite b wrong there...) Think it was a ploy 2 boost VHS sales alongside the DVD sales coz VHS is FAST goin out of fashion!

Ciao 4 now!

LBT and little brothers

by (no login)

My youngest brother, seven years old, has Downs syndrome, which causes him to act half his age. He likes to watch LBT, but unfortunately he also likes to throw things and bang things around. Recently this resulted in one of my LBT CDs being broken into three pieces.

How do your younger siblings like LBT?

Siblings and LBT

by Littlefoot-1616 (no login)

Hey Prehistorian!

It's kinda hard 2 say 4 me. My younger brother doesnt mind watching LBT and neither does my younger sister but they'll only watch it once or twice and then they woodnt watch it again unless I put it on. The 1 who is most likely 2 sit down and watch a LBT movie with me is actually my own mother funnily enuff! LOL! I think I get my passion 4 cartoon from her so she loves watching them with me. Much 2 my father's dismay coz he h8s cartoons! PMSL!

Oh well...each 2 their own!

TTFN!

No little brother but an older sister

by (no login)

Hi prehistorian!
I do not have any younger sibilings. I just have an older sister who regards my land before time enthusiasm with very occassional, very subtle contempt (for not matching my age group I suppose) but otherwise doesn't mind and does like LBT fanart when I show it to you.

1 bro............1sis

by Longneck (no login)

I have one brother and 1 sister who r each older than me. They could care less, I mean they don't totally hate it but if they want to watch tv but I'm already on the tv watching LBT they get quite angry and ask me why I like such a baby movie. Actually whenever I get a new LBT I think my bro likes it secretally because he laughs at the funny parts but after a week of owning it he could care less.
