question about LBT 10

by Lupine (no login)

Here's something I've been wondering about. Maybe you know the answer: I just didn't understand the whole basis of the Great Longneck Migration. All the longnecks IN THE WORLD went to a big hole in the earth, and "saved the world". Were they just joking...or...what? I just did not get that part. Thanks!

Solar eclipse

by (Login Malte279)
Forum Owner

The longnecks of course didn't save the world. It was just a solar eclipse. One can assume that such a natural even would be quite confusing and scary for dinosaurs who know nothing about its real origins. Maybe the whole thing can be compared with some elements of human religion.
I found it rather strange that a common dream brought all these longnecks there, but it were certainly not all. Where was Ali's herd? Where was Bron's herd? Where was Doc? etc.

True...
But if it was an eclipse, then why did all the longnecks go there? And...why not the other dinosaurs of the world?

Pat tells that reason

by Threehorn (no login)

if you listen to what pat says to the others. Cera, Ducky, Petrie and Spike.

He tells them that a elcipses came a long time ago and that his grandpa I think it is told him that story that a group of longnecks was at the hole when it happened so generations later it happens again and those from the family tree line from those get a dream telling which is mixed with instinct to go back to this place which their eariar genrations came too.

A bit more to lbt 11's plot

by megacharizard (no login)

I found a slightly more detailed plot here:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3322057

Plus, according to this url:
http://www.kenseinews.com/cetc/publish/electronic_entertainment/article_23963.shtml

two of the lbt 11 songs are : 'Creepy Crawlies' and 'Girls and Dads'

Hi megacharizard!
Thanks a lot for sharing this information with us!
It is quite interesting what the page http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3322057 has to say. The summary of the LBT 11 plot there reads:

Littlefoot worries that he'll never grow as tall as other longnecks while Cera gets angry when she discovers that her dad finds a new girlfriend. Littlefoot spoils Nibbling Day, but he blames a herd of tiny mysterious mussauruses for his own misbehavior. The angry grown-ups retaliate and cause an avalanche, which opens a tunnel from the Mysterious Beyond allowing two velociraptors entry to the Great Valley! The velociraptors wreak havoc until all of the dinosaurs including the disliked newcomers band together to chase them off. The Great Valley welcomes the brave little mussauruses, Cera learns to like her father's new friend and Littlefoot learns that physical size isn't so important after all.

I couldn't get to the other page though, is the spelling of the url correct?
Again Thanks a lot for letting us know!

Thanks again!
Now it works. It looks like they put quite a bit of additional music on the upcomming DvD. Even though we know the songs of earlier movies of course I think this is quite positive a developement
They are putting more than just the regular games for little kids on this DvD.

Not certain (I do hope)

by (Login Malte279)
Forum Owner

As for the story plot itself I'm still not certain. There are definitely elements which sound a little simple, like Littlefoot fearing never to grow up (though this is most likely going to be the case ). Still there may be some interesting ideas in it. This new girlfriend of Cera's dad (much as I hate the fact that this is also going to contradict my story "Old Threehorns") may turn out interesting.
I think that the ideas of the plot can turn out both ways, good or bad. If they handle the ideas in a better manner than they handled the good ideas of LBT 7, 8 and 10, I don't see why this one should not turn out good.
One thing I realize is that they seem to aim at kids with divorced parents now. This was written in a review of LBT 10 already.

Mo pretended to be stuck in lbt 9, Cera got her gorn stuck in a rock in lbt 10, Itchy managed to get his head struck through a thcik branch in lbt 4 and Ozzie and Strut were stuck for a second when they tried to run into a cave at the same time to escape a Flyer in lbt 2. Spike gets stuck in the original moivie to when they are flying from sharptooth after they spend a night in his footprint. It looks like Cera deals him quite a head-butt to push him through a narrow crevice into safety. Cera also squeezes herself through the trunk in LBT 6 (remarkably it took her quite an effort while Littlefoot got through smoothly, while Littlefoot usually looks a little bigger than Cera).
Littlefoot also gets stuck in a trunk in LBT 2 while Chomper's parents were after him. Only Chomper's presence saved him.

Hi!
WeirdRaptor / Drew L. has come up with a question in the GOF forum, which I find quite interesting, so I would like to put his question up here too:
"Which moment(s) in this film had the biggest impact on you?"
So which land before time scenes (from both the original and the sequels) do you like especially?

Possible inspirations behind the original and the sequels.

by Drew L. (no login)

It doesn't all have to be one inspiration. I'm just wondering: What book(s), Tv series, or other movie(s) may have been inspirations to something in this series of Direct-To-Video sequels and/or the original theatrically released film.

inspirations

by (Login Malte279)
Forum Owner

Hi!
As for the original, it is frequently said, even by Don Bluth himself, that it was partly inspired by Bambi. As for the sequels, there are different stories with similar themes though I can't think of any titles right now.
The Chomper story often works sort of the other way round, with somebody being raised by wild creatures which would actually be more likely to devour the individual (e.g. the jungle book or the saga of Romulus and Remus who were brought up by wolves). The story of LBT 4 (getting on a dangerous trip to get medicine for somebody who will die without it) can also be found frequently. Is not the movie "Balto" (which I never saw myself) about something similar?
There are many stories about a late reunification of son's with their fathers (though they are often going along with a totally different background). An example for this would be the saga of Odysseus (who I think is called Ulysses in America, though recently I learned that I may be wrong with this assumption).
In general I don't see any similarity so extrmely striking that I would take it for granted that one of the sequels was directly inspired by it. Still it is likely that the stories were inspiered by other stories and it sure would be interesting to find out about this. Does anyone know a story which is very similar to the one or the other LBT sequel?

Don't know

by AL (no login)

But I know that "Disney's Dinosaur" copies it in several areas--in both movies the egg is among several smashed ones, in both it is taken by an egg stealer, in both it lands in the river. And the lake scene echoes the dry canyon scene. One more thing: the Nesting Grounds are in a valley blocked off from attack, like the Great Valley.

unpopular possibilities

by (Login Malte279)
Forum Owner

That's a question I've always wondered about too. I consider including it in one future fanfiction. My (somewhat shaky thesis): All known entrances to the Great Valley are either blocked (like the one we saw in LBT 2), too small for really big sharpteeth to enter (small tunnels that would allow Littlefoot and the others to leave the Valley and the eggeaters to enter it, but that wouldn't admit big Sharpteeth), or guarded (all big entrances like the one through which Ali's herd entered. Guardians could rise the alarm so a great group of well equiped Valley inhabitants such as longnecks, clubtails, threehorns, and spiketails would be ready to receive intruders in favorable numbers and positions, so the risk would be small for them).
There are flaws in this theory. Firstly, an entrance too small for big sharpteeth is still likely to be a comfortable entrance for small raptors who, especially as a group, would be hardly less dangerous.
Secondly, if all big entrances were guarded all the time there was no way Littlefoot and the others could hope to leave unseen through a fairly big entrance in LBT 8; but this was clearly what they were hoping for before they were surprised by Mr. Thicknose. Moreover the risk would be small, but existant if the Valley inhabitants expected sharpteeth in superior numbers and favorable positions. However I hate the idea of regular "battles" taking place at the Valley entrances. I also hate the idea of the kind of military organization that would be required in the Great Valley for this.
Perhaps preperations are made to block the big entrances in case of danger (same as the fairly large entrance in LBT 2 was blocked), but firstly this doesn't sound too plausible as the terrain would not always allow quick blocking of the entrances. Perhaps flyers are patroling the regions around the Great Valley, which would grant more time than guardians being posted at the entrances, but again I do not really like that idea. Do you (all of you) have any suggestions?

Perhaps difficult terrain

by Noname (no login)

... benefits the inhabitants of the great valley. It appears that only a very few entrances allow for the passage of large dinosaurs (such as the entrence in the fourth movie.) It is also possible that the "hunting ranges" of the carnivores ("Sharpteeth") do not extend to the passages through the mountains into the Great Valley.
Furthermore, it appears that the odds that a carnivore could enter the Great Valley are remote, but it is still a possibility. It also looks like smaller creatures can enter with no problem, even malevolent ones (such as Ozzy and Srut in the second movie.) Another factor that comes to mind is the harsh terrain surrounding the Great Valley. Maybe the predators don't have the determination to cross into the Great Valley, unless they were motavated by some higher purpose (such as when Chomper's parent's recovered him in the second movie.)
It would make no sense for a lone predator, or even a whole herd of predators to enter the Great Valley for food, as they would be outnumbered by the Valley's inhabitants, and would surely meet defeat in a pitched battle, being so outnumbered. Of course, if the predator's prescence goes undetected, they might just be able to live in the Valley. Of course, it would have to be a smaller predator.

My far-fetched theory

by (no login)

Perhaps, once upon a time, there was such a military system in the Great Valley, and guards were posted at all the entrances.

Then, perhaps, each of these guards died heroically defending the entrances against sharpteeth, winning their battles but dying in the process. All except the guard(s) of the blocked entrance(s), which was closed later by perhaps an earthshake, or by design.

Maybe the great battles fought by these guards became legends. (You'd be surprised how quickly legends can form and spread.) Maybe the young children are told that they need not fear sharpteeth inside the Valley because the ghosts of these heroic guards kill any sharpteeth that dare venture near.

Maybe flyers (remember, some eat meat) told the sharpteeth these legends. Perhaps the sharpteeth believed them and dared not go near these "guarded" entrances.

So the Great Valley dinosaurs say that sharpteeth "cannot" get in when the truth is that they do not dare to try.

An unlikely theory, but like Sherlock Holmes we must look for the possible, not the probable.

Hi TB!
Actually I didn't make this forum. I'm by no means its founder. This forum was created by a network54 user who used the name "Littlefoot" in this forum (and was sometimes confused with other Littlefoots). However, the founder of the forum wasn't heard of for a long while (I think the last time was in early 2001). When the forum was frequently the target of spam or inappropriate messages I tried to find the founder of the forum. The search was in vain, but then I asked network54 (who considered this most active forum to be abandoned) for administrative powers to prevent spamming and the like, and was made the owner of the forum just a few months ago.
However, it is possible to create own forums at network54 if you have an identity there (go to www.network54.com to get one). It doesn't cost anything and is quite easy to handle.
