I am not myself anymore and I don't know if I can maintain my marriage, take care of my child and work anymore. Something has to give at this point. BUT, since doctors will not address this issue and do REAL studies on it, we have no statistics to rely on to give you a percentage chance of problems. A british study said something like up to 40% of TL patients experienced menstral changes. They do not address other issues or symptoms that many of us experience nor do they say really how many of the menstral changes are bad. Some women experience NO negative side effects, most women that do experience negative side effects say that it is worth the benefit of not having to worry about birth control, and then you have the ladies here who consider this the worst decision of their lives. If doctors would acknowledge us then maybe we could really address these issues and have proper informed consent and be able to tell ladies like you (considering TL) what your chances for a negative outcome are. Please, if you do have TL, let us all know how it goes for you. It would probably be in your best interest to have an entire hormonal panel test so you have a comparison for later if you do experience problems.
You are young, please take your time with this decision. I know that I was like you, and did not want children at all. I could not take birth control pills due to side effects, and I looked into IUD but no doctor would give me an IUD since I had not had children. Well, this lead to my looking into TL and deciding that it was my best choice (with the information provided to me by doctors.) Hubby did not want me to be sterilized without giving him children first since the operation is considered permanent, so he pressured me into having a child for him with the promise that he would have a vasectomy to spare me from the birth control delimma and surgery for a TL. Well, long story short, he broke his promises and I end up getting pregnant a second time then having TL so I did not have to worry about birth control again. You could say that the TL had the desired effect because now I can't even stand sex most of the time. My sex drive used to be in high gear, hard to control (and a lot of fun,) but now I have no sex drive in addition to the other terrible side effects. I, personally, would prefer a vow of celibacy to what this has done to my body.
