I'm 44 and done having kids (I have two girls, ages 8 and 11). I can't take BC pills because they give me ovarian cysts at this point in my life (I was able to take them when I was younger with no problem). My husband won't do a vas an we HATE condoms. So I'm considering getting a tubal ligation. Of course after reading this site, I'm not so sure...I want to do a lot more research before even asking my OB/GYN about it.
Anyway, I want to mention to you ladies...if you have "symptoms," please also consider getting your THYROID checked! After the birth of my second child, I had the following symptoms:
Depression
Hair falling out
Dry skin
Sleepy all the time
Gaining/not able to lose weight
Cranky/moody
No energy
My TSH (Thyroid hormone) level was 10.0. Anything over 3.0 is considered hypothyroid. I have been on Synthroid since then (and got some Prozac for a while to help with the depression). Now I'm fine. Your TSH is tested with a simple blood test. Your doctor might also want to check your blood for thyroid antibodies (I have that, too). My condition is technially called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. It is hypothyroidism with antibodies (and is considered an autoimmune problem). No biggie...the Synthroid helps keep everything normal.
If you want more info on this condition, go to About.com and look at Mary Shoman's pages; they are incredibly informative (plus there's a great message board).
