U.S.: Turks Solved The Deadlock

The U.S. administration believes that stance that the Turkish side assumed in the first two days of the talks in New York, was constructive and one step ahead of the other party.

A high-ranking U.S. official said that the Turkish side covered a great distance to solve the stalemate. He said; As they have previously claimed, they are going one step ahead. The Turkish side is acting constructively and cooperatively. (Hürriyetim)

When Denktash can walk in the door without offending everyone by his BO and chitty personality, the US figures it's a good start! Since Turkey has refused to talk for 30 years, it's nice that they finally got serious about it. They must want EU real bad! Too bad they'll never get in unless they make some MAJOR concessions over Cyprus. Just showing up and being nice isn't going to get the job done! LOL.

Why can't Cyprus form a single country which does not belong to Turkey nor Greece, while all people living in Cyprus rules the country.

BUT:
While 50-50 Turks and Greeks population in Cyprus, be fair.

FOUR TIMES as many Greeks in Cyprus as Turks, but the Turks want EQUAL political representation. What kind of a democracy can work when one sides vote is worth 4 times what the other sides vote is worth?? Answer: it will NOT work. Thats why the Greeks are protesting. They want one man/one vote. True democracy with a Bill of Rights to guarantee basic rights. Problem is, the Turk Cypriot leadership-Denktash-doesn't want to give up power. Thats why the talks aren't going anywhere.

Do you think that the Turks are stupid?

Why would we agree to allowing the greeks have more power on the island?

There are more greeks on the island yes, that is more reason for there to be an equal vote regardless of the populations of both sides because if side A has more power than side B, side B becomes a minority and will be unfairly treated. In 50 years, side B is worthless.

This is the reason why the Turks invaded Cyprus in the first place. The greeks wanted "ENOSIS" with greece thus wanted ALL of Cyprus to be greek therefore started to kill the Turks!

Thats why Turkey couldnt stand aside and see its people being killed!

If we give more power to greece, who's to say the greek nationalists or expansionists wont arise again and massacre the Turks AGAIN?

Oh KKG - Watch your comments, ILLIRIA has warned you! There is nothing scarier than that! LOL

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/cy.html

Background:
Independence from the UK was approved in 1960, with constitutional guarantees by the Greek Cypriot majority to the Turkish Cypriot minority. In 1974, a Greek-sponsored attempt to seize the government was met by military intervention from Turkey, which soon controlled almost 40% of the island. In 1983, the Turkish-held area declared itself the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," but it is recognized only by Turkey. UN-led direct talks between the two sides to reach a comprehensive settlement to the division of the island began in January 2002.

Population: 771,657 (July 2003 est.)
Greek 85.2%, Turkish 11.6%, other 3.2% (2000)

Military branches:
Greek Cypriot area: Greek Cypriot National Guard (GCNG; including air and naval elements), Greek Cypriot Police
Turkish Cypriot area: Turkish Cypriot Security Force (GKK)

Disputes - international:
hostilities in 1974 divided the island into two de facto autonomous areas, a Greek Cypriot area controlled by the internationally recognized Cypriot Government and a Turkish-Cypriot area, separated by a UN buffer zone; UN deadline on sides accepting a federation plan for reunification have expired, diminishing chances of Turkish-Cypriot participation in EU membership in 2004

From this map you see Cyprus is so close to Turkey:
