It was a stalemate for everyone but the DPRK. The original mission of the UN forces was to preserve South Korea. After the North Korean military began to collapse that was modified to unification of the Korean peninsula under the ROK. Although successful in defending South Korea the UN & ROK forces failed to unify the peninsula.

China intervened initially to preserve North Korea. When their offensive went well and the UN forces were in retreat that was modified to unification of the Korean peninsula under the DPRK. Although successful in defending North Korea, China failed to push the UN into the sea and unify the peninsula.

North Korea lost. The sole reason the DPRK started the war was to unify the peninsula, and of course they failed. In fact had China not interved the DPRK wouldn't be around today. Their military had been effectively destroyed by the UN & ROK forces and they were only capable of token resistance in the defense of their own country.

The American Marine Division has the highest combat effectiveness in the American armed forces. It seems not enough for our four divisions to surround and annihilate its two regiments.

Sar12,

It was a stalemate. The CCF succeeded in preserving the DPRK but failed to push the UN & ROK forces into the sea. Initially China entered the war to save the DPRK, but after intitial successes it suffered from the same tragic error of overconfidence that that UN & ROK forces had made when they pushed into North Korea. In Jan. of 1951 the CCF launched the third phase of its offensive, this one aimed at pushing the UN & ROK forces into the sea and unifying Korea under the DPRK. It was stopped south of Seoul and all territorial gains the CCF had made in South Korea were lost in a UN & ROK counteroffensive. Following the failure of Chinese offensive China abandoned any effort aimed at unifying the peninsula.

I think for the Chinese it is a Big Victory, because the Chinese started from the Chinese-Korean Border, and Occupied the whole N.Korea.

Although Chinese lost some battles, like Chinese first captured Seoul, then pushed back to 38 line, but as for the Whole War, Chinese Won, because before the war Chinese had no territory in Korea, after War, Chinese occupied Half of Korea.
