Givati Brigade Commander speaks out, following the death of two girls at Bet-lahiya,
"We would not kill a Palestinian child trying to harm soldiers".
The reality is that armed Palestinians grab children by the neck, and run with them. They catch kids, by grabbing their school bags, and then run with them. It's no secret that the armed terrorists use children as a shield," said Givati Brigade commander, Colonel Eyal Eisenberg, described the fighting in Bet-lahiya in the Gaza Strip yesterday.
The statement came after Palestinians reported two Bet-lahiya girls killed by IDF tank fire and tear gas yesterday. Armored units of the Givati Brigade entered the town on Tuesday morning for a broad-based operation against Kassam rocket launchers.
"For us the situation is clear. We will not kill any child trying to harm an IDF soldier", Eisenberg told Maariv. "We will not hurt any child, because that would delegitimize our struggle in the area.
"Our forces were out by the afternoon, while the event itself was reported in the evening", said Eisenberg, responding to the dispatches about the death of the two girls. "Most of the forces were out of the area, but a unit of the Northern Brigade did stay on, so I cannot comment on that. In any event, until we left the area at 1 PM, no problematic incidents were registered”.
An IDF source, commented on the Palestinian report, "No unusual events were reported as the last unit left Bet-lahiya. We know nothing about incidents involving firing at children. At the same time, we cannot rule out the possibility of IDF involvement indicated in the Palestinian report". At divisional headquarters in Gaza an enquiry is underway to check the accuracy of the reports.
"Our message is loud and clear", Colonel Eisenberg summed up IDF activity in the strip. "If quiet is not maintained, we will go back there and they will have to face the consequences. I think that our message was very clear".
