WASHINGTON -- Pat Tillman, who walked away from his professional football career to join the Army Rangers, was killed in Afghanistan, U.S. officials said Friday.

He was 27.

  • ABCNEWS coverage
  • The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said a formal announcement was expected later in the day. Spokesmen at the Pentagon and U.S. Army declined comment.

Tillman was killed in direct action during a firefight in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, Pentagon sources told ABCNEWS.

A Pentagon source told ABCNEWS that Tillman was killed when his Rangers patrol was attacked by small arms fire and mortars during a coordinated ambush.

One enemy combatant was killed, and Tillman was the only U.S. soldier killed during the ambush, said Pentagon sources. His brother Kevin is in the same platoon.

Pat Tillman's battalion was involved in "Operation Mountain Storm," part of the U.S. campaign against Taliban and al-Qaida groups along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, military officials said.

Some members of the Army's elite Ranger units were taking part in the hunt for al-Qaida and Taliban fighters in southeastern Afghanistan, the military official said.

"I am heartbroken today by the news of Pat Tillman's death. The tragic loss of this extraordinary young man will seem a heavy blow to our nation's morale, as it is surely a grievous injury to his loved ones," Sen.John McCain, R-Ariz., said in a statement.

"But there is in Pat Tillman's example, in his unexpected choice of duty to his country over the riches and other comforts of celebrity, and in his humility, such an inspiration to all of us to reclaim the essential public-spiritedness of Americans that many of us, in low moments, had worried was no longer our common distinguishing trait."

    Schlereth on Tillman
I never played football with or against Pat Tillman and I didn't know him, but I wish I had. Simply put, he was an American hero. He had the courage of his convictions to walk away from the money, prestige, celebrity and fame that an NFL career offers. To do that takes incredible amounts of integrity and heroism.

Tillman made the ultimate sacrifice so that the people of this country could be protected. He should be honored by Arizona State University, the Arizona Cardinals and the NFL. I regret that I didn't know this amazing human being.
    -- Mark Schlereth

Tillman played four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before enlisting in the Army in May 2002. The safety turned down a three-year, $3.6 million deal from Arizona.

He made the decision after returning from his honeymoon with his wife, Marie. The Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks are also believed to have been motivation for Tillman and his brother to enlist.

Kevin, a former minor league baseball prospect in the Cleveland Indians' organization, also joined the Rangers and served in the Middle East. They committed to three-year stints in the Army.

The Tillmans' goal to join the Rangers was not an easy one to achieve. Only 35 percent of all candidates get to wear the coveted black and gold Ranger Tab.

Tillman's agent, Frank Bauer, has called him a deep and clear thinker who has never valued material things.

"All NFL players mourn the tragic and untimely death of Pat Tillman, one of our own," said Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players Association, in a statement. "His courage and heart transcended football and we will miss him. Pat Tillman is a true American hero. Our thoughts and our prayers are with the entire Tillman family."

In 2001, Tillman turned down a $9 million, five-year offer sheet from the Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams out of loyalty to the Cardinals, and by joining the Army he passed on millions more from the team.

Tillman turned aside interview requests after joining the Army. He had denied requests for media coverage of his enlistment, basic training and ultimate deployment. According to Army officials at the time, Tillman wanted no special treatment, wanted no special attention, but wanted to be considered just one of the soldiers doing his duty for his country.

"When Pat made his choice to leave the NFL and became an Army Ranger, he declined requests for interviews because he viewed his decision as no more patriotic than that of his less fortunate, less renowned countrymen who loved our country enough to volunteer to defend her in a time of peril," McCain said in his statement. "It is that first lesson of patriotism that we should reaffirm in our own lives as we celebrate the courageous life and mourn the heroic death of this most honorable American."

In December, during a trip home, Tillman made a surprise visit to his Cardinal teammates.

"For all the respect and love that all of us have for Pat Tillman and his brother and Marie, for what they did and the sacrifices they made ... believe me, if you have a chance to sit down and talk with them, that respect and that love and admiration increase tenfold," Coach Dave McGinnis said at the time. "It was a really, really enriching evening."

Pat was first deployed to Iraq in march 2003 with the 75th Regiment Ranger Battalion, but it was not immediately clear when he went to Afghanistan.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Tillman was distinguished by his intelligence and appetite for rugged play. As an undersized linebacker at Arizona State, he was the Pac-10's defensive player of the year in 1997.

He set a franchise record with 224 tackles in 2000 and warmed up for last year's training camp by competing in a 70.2-mile triathlon in June.

Tillman carried a 3.84 grade point average through college and graduated with high honors in 3½ academic years with a degree in marketing.

"You don't find guys that have that combination of being as bright and as tough as him," Phil Snow, who coached Tillman as Arizona State's defensive coordinator, said in 2002. "This guy could go live in a foxhole for a year by himself with no food."

Tillman and his brother Kevin last year won the Arthur Ashe Courage award at the 11th annual ESPY Awards. Their younger brother, Richard, accepted the award while the brothers were away.

Far too often professional athletes are called 'heroes' by the media. The vast majority aren't. Pat Tillman is a hero.

The American Marine Division has the highest combat effectiveness in the American armed forces. It seems not enough for our four divisions to surround and annihilate its two regiments.

well said gyrene. I can't stand the war analogies that are attributed to sports. I remember boris becker the german tennis great and his response to a question after an especially gruelling tennis match.

interviewer: "boris that was a war out there!"

becker: " it wasn't a war. nobody died and no one is hurt. it's tennis, a sport and you shouldn't forget that."

    Great reply by Becker.

"One enemy combatant was killed, and Tillman was the only U.S. soldier killed during the ambush, said Pentagon sources. His brother Kevin is in the same platoon."

Christ...his brother in the same platoon? That's a damned shame, especially if he was there when his brother was killed.

I just watched an emotional press conference at arizona cardinals team headquarters. he once turned down a 5 year 9 million dollar offer to go to another team ( a winning team) because he was loyal to 'the team that gave me a chance'(cardinals who are yearly a terrible team). he rode a bicycle to practice while his teammates drove luxery vehicles. his salary when he died? army salary of 18,000 a year.

Damn, was it on ESPN? If so maybe I can catch it again later.

What a terrible shame. Gyrene hit the nail on the head. All too often sports "heroes" are undeservingly admired. This is a man who deserved every bit of admiration and celebrity that he got, and more.

A true patriot, he gave up wealth, luxury, and celebrity for a life of humble and rigorous service to his nation.

On a different note, isnt kind of strange? He must have been the first US servicman to die in Afghanistan in MONTHS, and it just happened to be him.

it was on the cable news networks as well as espnnews. an idea is being circulated to petition the nfl to paint the 40 yard lines in stadiums (his number was 40) red, white and blue to honor him. parents would then explain the significance of that yard line and why it is a different color from other lines on the field.

This guy has my utmost respect.  He walked away from millions of dollars to do a thankless job for his country.  RIP.

I only wish we could conscript Barry Bonds, Warren Sapp, Robert Downey Jr, Tom Cruise and other multi-million dollar crybabies into the military.

right on diunei. people across America don't know what those in florida know about warren sapp. national media has him as a big lovable guy while those who know him well have seen how mean he is to everyone. telling autograph seekers to f__ off and cursing out kids at golf events for asking for an autograph. he fought with teammates, impregnated many women and tried to pay people to take paternity tests for him so he could deny being the father. behaved like tyson against women, walked out of expensive restaurant tabs and hated all autograph seekers especially those who were white. 8 year old kids were cursed out. I myself almost started a riot one year at bucs minicamp for cursing out sapp when he walked by. a former teammate of his, chidi ahanotu, once fought him in a restaurant chidi owned for walking out on a huge tab. those who know that area know why sapp was traded, the fans hated him while the nation liked him. bonds is no better.

This guy is a real Hero.

While most American players are freaken lazy to even represent their country in world championships and Olympics...this guy rejects multimillion dollar offers and goes to Afghanistan risiking his life to capture terrorists, so less harm can hit this world. While all these NBA stars and BAseball Stars try their best to find excuses to not be on the american team.A bunch of lazy arrogant NBA players fear that terrorists will harm them in Athens for this year's Olympics(even though that country has three times the budget 1Billion$ for the security of the games, and security force of any previus olympic city). This guy is going to hunt down terrorists when these ...ussies are scared of them.....
