America-

is the generation that had to deal with the great depression and ww2. incredible what that group endured and overcame. here is a brief summary (taken from the introduction of a book) that describes that generation:

"They came of age during the Great Depression and the Second World War and went on to build modern America -- men and women whose everyday lives of duty, honor, achievement, and courage gave us the world we have today."

this group gave new meaning to courage, sacrifice, honor.

From military heroes to community leaders to ordinary Americans, the profiles men and women who served their country with valor, then came home and transformed America: Senator Daniel Inouye, decorated at the front, fighting prejudice at home; Martha Putney, one of the first black women to serve in the newly formed WACs; Charles Van Gorder, a doctor who set up a MASH-like medical facility in the middle of battle, then came home to open a small clinic in his hometown; Navy pilot George Bush, assigned to read the mail of the enlisted men under him, who says that in doing so "I learned about life." And there are more, all seasoned by a time of tragedy and triumph.

With the possible exception of Switzerland I think every country faced severe hardship during the 1930s, especially China.  As such, I think this generation of Chinese (i.e. Mao Zedong's generation) was the "greatest" because this generation faced genocide (from Japan), unequal treaties, massive poverty (except for the corrupt few) and poor technology levels.  Furthermore, the Chinese communists were being killed by both their fellow Chinese (nationalists) and the Japanese, and above all, they went on that epic Long March.  Therefore, despite the absolute disasters known as the "Great Leap Forward" and "Prolaterian Cultural Revolution," the first CCP generation, Mao's time, was the greatest for China IMHO.

In America, we can see greats souls/men in all eras/periods of the history ,and this, fortunately, is one's of the reasons why America is great and a great exemple to all nations;but,to me,the latest great and a real modern saint of no especific religion is the man and soldier hero called PAT TILLMAN for who I pried every day together Bush.
In Brazil/Portugal I can tell:Dom PedroI of Brazil and Dom PedroIII of Portugal, Dom João VI,Dom Manuel O Venturoso,Pedro Alvares Cabral,Vasco da Gama,Fernão de Magalhães,Princesa Isabel and others.

I Believe that the greatest time for Canadian Forces would have to be around WW2-Korea.. Canada has been known to be one of the major NATO Training grounds for fighter Pilots and other Air Force pilots. The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan until the Avro Arrow until our Carrier groups which Banshee Navy Fighters were flown off of. I believe also CF-86 Sabres. Canada had one of the largest Armed Forces after WW2 until major budget cuts started to happen, there have been just downsizing from there. I think Canada has great potential as a power but uses its money on other ministries of the government.

Maybe the time of 1866-1871 when the german empire was created under Bismarck

After hundreds of years of small independent kingdoms, areas ruled by bishops, areas ruled by barons and simply nobles who exploited the people
all this supported by the French and British who wanted to do everything to keep Germany divided...

But Prussia had some really wise leaders, good generals and politicians and they showed all the other germans the way to go

"Es wird niemals so viel gelogen wie vor der Wahl, während des Krieges und nach der Jagd." Otto von Bismarck

Long live Nato and the EU and the Western world.
