An Israeli start-up has put together a spherical sensor, packed with 360-degree cameras and microphones, that can see and hear everything in a 25-meter radius, and send the pictures and sounds back to HQ.

The omni-directional images could give "field commanders... a front-row seat inside terrorist lairs," Defense News says. "If hostages are involved, rescuers may be able to communicate discreetly with captives via microphones and speakers implanted in the devices."

O.D.F. Optronics calls its orb -- surprise, surprise -- Eyeball. And prototypes of the little guy have already been ordered by the Pentagon and by Israeli forces.
All the electronics inside are floating, and will be housed in three layers of rubber, which serve as shock absorbers," O.D.F. chief Ehud Gal tells Defense News. "You can throw it, or shoot it from a specially equipped sniper’s rifle, and it can stick to the wall or start transmitting as soon as it stabilizes."

With Eyeball's specially designed reflective lens, "everything is in focus and you have an unlimited depth of field," Gal adds.

"The raw image transmitted by the omni-directional lens has a distorted shape." But a couple of algorithms chew up the footage, and spit back out a scene we people can understand. Game, set, match.

sounds like an impressive piece of kit!

it probably wouldnt be fired directly from the gun as if it were a bullet, its probably a grenade-launcher style attachment like the M8, or the same thing as the beanbag round launcher on certain versions of the M4. lower launch velocity, but still good and accurate.

It does not necessary have to be very accurate.
It is very good for urabn warfare, or house to house operation.
U just throw it through the window and u now what is going on in the house.

25 metres is really short when deployed in the field...if deployed in a urban environment it might have better uses.

Better some than none.

Very informative. So you mean it will be fired from a low velocity weapon. thatys good. i was thinking it could be fropped from drones or something, maybe in future.

BTW, what is "the beanbag launcher" on the m4? can you post a picture here? i know little about american personnel weapons.

Impressive equitment. I hope Israel put it t use and export it.

I for one would like Israel to sell them to China, so roll them out I say!

Otherwise I would think these electronic eyeballs would come in handy for hostage situations or even fighting in the forest/jungles.
