ILLIRIA and LANDOS - I thought you might be interested.

Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said yesterday that Turkey leads the world in terms of export growth based upon the export average of the first five months of 2004.

Tuzmen gave the opening speech at the International Istanbul Textile Machinery Fair being held at the TUYAP Beylikduzu Fair and Congress Center. The Fair is the largest ever assembled in the world and is number one with respect to its volume in the field of textile machinery.

After his speech, Tuzmen responded to questions from journalists. Tuzmen said, "Currently our monthly exports seem to be settling around 5 billion dollars. This is very good. Reaching 5 billion dollars in monthly exports means that we take in 60 billion dollars annually. God willing this level will continue."

Tuzmen emphasized that even if the exchange rates did not change, it would not create a big problem in export coverage. "As you know," explained Tuzmen, "when the exchange rate sharply decreased, the export coverage rate fell to the level of 62 percent. Our main target is 70 percent and above. At the moment, it is around the level of 66-67 percent. Next month, it will be a little bit better. If this continues, there will not be a big problem. The export coverage rate will continue at this desired level."

Tuzmen also expressed that the increase in oil prices will cost the economy close to 5.5 billion dollars.

60 billion dollars annually, really not bad for a nation with only 50 millions.

I wish it would be only 50 million

I think today they have 70 million and it is predicted there will soon live 90 million people in Turkey

Not just exports. Turkey's balance of trade is mediocre. Thats why they have such high unemployment.

HBN - You may be one of the very few people that are always critical of Turkey for no reason.

Turkey has a very young population of 71 million. 27% of our population is between 0-14 years of age. 15-64 years olds hold 66% of the population.

Turkeys population is one of the fastest growing in europe with a birth rate of 1.16%.

Turkey's GDP growth in 2002 was 7.8%, in 2003 it was 5.5% and the target in 2004 is 6.5%.

Our exports are expected to hit $60 billion at the end of 2004.

Landos - Turkey imports a lot, yes but this means that we are very important to the countries we buy off. Its a strategic decision to import. Besides, Turkey is becoming more and more self reliant. Soryr to dissapoint you.

If I can make a point, Turkey nearly went into IMF default in 2000, which gives plenty of reason for skepticism.
