it is being reported that saddams explanations for the kuwaiti invasion range from 'keeping the army occupied' to his 'kuwait was stealing oil and prostituting iraqi women for $10'

first of all, what does he mean about the prostituting? secondly, saddam was willing to do anything to retain power so I believe the theory about keeping his army doing other things such as invading kuwait but the larger question must be asked; did he invade iran for similar reasons?

why is he not charged with that invasion in the indictment? it touched off one of the bloodiest wars in history and certinly his troops were guilty of far worse crimes against iran than kuwait ( the babies dying in incubators story was false).

virtually everything going on today can be traced to his invasion of iran.

the need to recoup revenue from that war led to his invasion of kuwait which led to gulf war 1, leading to sanctions, no fly zones, inspectors, his violations of international law, and today's war.

I'd be interested to hear your theories.

It seems these kidnappers finally had the gall to brutalise a soldier instead of just civilians.

Baghdad — An Iraqi militant group claimed on a website Saturday that it had beheaded a captive U.S. marine, in what would be the fourth decapitation of a foreign hostage in the region since May.

The group, called the Ansar al-Sunna Army, posted a written statement on an Islamic website claiming that it had killed Lebanese-born Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun, 24.

"We would like to inform you that the marine of Lebanese origin, Hassoun, has been slaughtered. You are going to see the video with your very eyes soon," said the statement, signed in the name of the group's leader, Abu Abdullah al-Hassan bin Mahmoud.

The U.S. military in Baghdad said it was checking into the report but had no immediate confirmation.

The group called itself the Ansar al-Sunna Army in Qaim, a town on the Iraqi border with Syria that has seen frequent clashes between U.S. troops and militants. The message was dated June 20, the day the military said Corporal Hassoun was first reported missing — though the posting was dated Saturday.

In West Jordan, Utah, relatives of Corporal Hassoun were in seclusion Saturday. A representative of the Khadeeja mosque in nearby West Valley City met with family members for about 15 minutes and refused to comment as he left the home, where the yard had been decorated in recent days by about two dozen flags put up by Boy Scouts.

The statement from the militants demanded a withdrawal of army troops "or else we will keep doing what we are doing."

On June 27, the Arab television station Al-Jazeera broadcast a videotape showing Hassoun blindfolded, along with a statement from militants threatening to kill him unless the United States releases all Iraqis in "occupation jails."

In that initial statement, the kidnappers identified themselves as Islamic Response, the security wing of the National Islamic Resistance - 1920 Revolution Brigades, referring to the uprising against the British after the First World War.

Saturday's claim on Corporal Hassoun's death was issued on the same Islamic extremist website where footage was posted last month showing the beheading of U.S. engineer Paul M. Johnson Jr., in Saudi Arabia. The site often carries claims of attacks by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant said to be operating in Iraq.

Mr. Al-Zarqawi's movement claimed responsibility for the beheading of Kim Sun-il, a South Korean who worked for a company delivering supplies to American forces, and Nicholas Berg, an American businessman, whose body was found in Baghdad in May. Mr. Johnson's slaying was claimed by al-Qaeda-linked militants in Saudi Arabia, and pictures of his severed head were posted on the Internet.

Another militant group in Iraq claimed last week that it had killed Specialist Keith Maupin, an American soldier who had been held captive since April. The military has not yet confirmed that Maupin was shown in grainy video footage of a man being shot in the back of the head.

In Saturday's statement, the militants said they used a woman to trap Corporal Hassoun. "As your soldier had a love affair with a young Arab woman, he has been lured from the base," the statement said.

The U.S. military said Corporal Hassoun had been absent without authorization since July 20, although after the video was shown it listed his status as "captured."

This is a very good pint, and an issue that really p!sses me off. The Kuwaitis gave Saddam tens of billions of dollars when he was fighting Iran, I have to say, they got what they deserved from this monster that they helped to create. But its really funny how the invasion of Kuwait keeps being mentioned, even though they were responsible for the creation of this monster, but the invasion of Iran is not mentioned at all, even though the human rights abuses that Saddam inflicted on the Iranians was ten folds worse than what he did in Kuwait. He even used Chemical weapons on the Iranians, which were supplied to him by the west. I think the main reason why they don't want to charge him for his crimes against Iran is because many of the western leaders had helped Saddam, including Chirac, Thatcher, Bush senior and Rumsfeld. It would indeed be very embracing for the west and its image, if Saddam was to tell the whole world how all these “Humanitarian” western leaders actually armed him, and supported him in his massacre of Iranians.
It would sure bring back allot of ugly memories to the Iranians if Saddam was to reveal his secrets about who helped and armed him.

Iran to present indictment against Saddam

July 04, 2004, 13:01

Iran said today it would submit an indictment to the Baghdad court trying Saddam Hussein, who as president waged a protracted war against his neighbour.

Saddam, caught last year by US troops, appeared in court on Thursday and was told by an Iraqi judge he would face charges relating to seven alleged crimes spanning three decades, but no mention was made of the 1980-1988 war against Iran.

"Iran will definitely submit an indictment to the court, it is ready," Hamid Reza Asefi, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, told a news conference. "The trial should be open and his crimes against Iran should be reviewed."

Charges against Saddam cover invading Kuwait in 1990, suppressing uprisings by Kurds and Shi'ites after the 1991 Gulf war, ethnic cleansing of Kurds in 1987-88 and gassing Kurdish villagers in 1988.

Hundreds of thousands died on both sides in the war of attrition between Iran and Iraq, in which Baghdad used poison gas against Iranian soldiers and civilians. - Reuters

Iraq's interim prime minister, Iyad Allawi, said last week the trial would be open, but earlier he suggested closing it to keep Saddam from broadcasting embarrassing tales about past links to foreign governments. The U.S. government was among those to quietly support Saddam's Iraq in the war with Iran.

Thursday's session already was closed in good part, off-limits to the public and all but a few journalists. Saddam's voice also was suppressed on the videotape aired on Iraqi television and no official transcript has been released.
