The Hollywood movie "U-571" is based on this German film which far surpasses it. It's based on a true story in which the crew of a German sub sunk by the British in WW2 raises the sub to the water's surface through excellent management, discipline & engineering skill. The sub's Captain reminds me of my late father, born in the USA of German & Austrian heritage and an excellent engineer. He loved measurement & precision.

Very well done. But I don't think "U-571" was a similar story. Quite different, actually.

Germans still make fine diesel-electric submarines. Probably the best conventionally powered subs out there. Greece has 8 and is acquiring four more from Thyssen that will have fuel-cell drive!
