I see Russia like this, It has 6 choices to make in the next 10 years
1. Ally with China, Reject the USA and eventually start WW3 and probably gain a lot of ground with China has her ally and eventually the conflict would stagnate, and nukes would fly.
2. Ally with India, its unlikely because India is becoming more pro-USA, but this may be a good economic partnership, especially if India's living standards increase, Russian food for Indian gold.
3. Make the Triple-Alliance Dwla with both and create a new imbalance of power for the Russia-China-India alliance and basically become the worl police assuming the USA goes into its isolationist mode.
4. Make the EU your buddy and become rich and powerless, the EU is going to be the most panzy-peacekeeping bunch of countries to ever exsist. If Russia and the EU become partners the technologies will be unsurpassed and the Economy would be great, although this means Russia won't need a large military, just enough to keep them defended.
5. Make the USA your buddy and go world policeing with your Artillery, which could happen if the US will give the cash, this means that the USA just asks Russia to level a town full of bi-standards and the Government and citizens of USA are happy and the Russians are happy with their miney.
6. They finally get the curroption gone, and turn the Russian economy into a boom atmosphere, Trading partners are likely to be a little of everything, and Assuming global warming makes the north a little warmer Canada and Russia may make a large Economic relationship because of similarities in the countries. This is the path Russia is on, sell, sell, sell, sell. Putin is right to do this, make Russia independent and make other countries need her. I'd say if Putin stays in power through 2012 Russia will be building its technologies in moderation. Right now the most advanced Russian equpiment isn't being produced because its too expensive, once the expense problem is gone I expect to be drooling over lots and lots of new Russian equipment.
Wow, that was a lot more then I expected to write .... hmmm...
