Mil 24s are great helicopters for places that are undefended,
otherwise, they are an easy target.
A friend of mine who had served in the Iran-Iraq war was once telling me about this ambush that his team had carried out against a Mil 24 helo gunship. He said that they waited behind a hilltop, and when the Mil 24 came close enough, they shot it down using a RPG-7!!! He said the whole plane just "turned into powder"!
The Afghans also were shooting down those ugly things like flies with the Stinger missiles, although to be fair, it would be a rare thing if stingers or any other modern MANPADS were unable to shoot down any helicopter with great ease!

Soviet doctrine needed working on, now they seem to have the good idea by producing a seperate gun ship (kamov-150) and the Kasatka transport...excellent idea IMO.

They are not ugly, just a dumb idea.

Israel lost 1 Cobra to the Syrians in Lebanon war.
We loose zero Helicopters to Hizbolla or other terror groups who also have
Stinger missiles.
The americans lost Apache Helicopters in Iraq and the Soviets in Afghanistan.
Its all depend on the EW and the pilot skills.

After the war in Afghanistan those missiles spread all aver the world.

What do you mean pilot skill....There is no pilot skill when there is an RPG/M-72 type team in a close by hill. If the choper doesnt see them it takes 3 seconds to squeeze off the rocket towards the chopter...

lets look at the terrain, shall we?

Israel- Open deserts

Iraq- Urban cities where they can pop out of schools.
Afghanistan- rocky mountains perfect for RPG teams.

Israel has good terrain and can take out units from far away while knownig where they are at...

Mil Mi-24 is a very large helicopter, and its pretty old as well. Thats why it's easy to detect him and shoot him down. Like dan said, it also depends on the pilots skills. For example, if your a skilled pilot and some one shoots you with an RPG-7, you will probably be able to get away from it.
All modern Attack helicopters carry flares, chaffs and other anti missile systems, like systems that are used to cool down the hot air thats coming out of the engine. Modern attack helicopters are also much harder to detect because they make less noise. For example, when Israeli Apaches attack in Gaza, the arabs always say that they never hear them coming, and they realise that the Apaches are there only when the AGM-114 Hellfire missile (that the Apache fired) hits it's target and makes a big and loud BOOM!
Arabs have tons of RPGs in Gaza but they almost never use them. probably because they don't know how to use them well.
once they tried to fire an RPG-7 at an Israeli Merkava tank, they missed by alot.
