I am guessing it is the SS United Victory class armed cargo ships.  USA and UK would have needed them to ferry supplies from Canada and USA to the UK; US navy would have used them to supply the Republic of China; and Israel would have taken them from surplus US inventories.

Was captured by the Israeli navy after combat and surrender in the 1956 Sinai campaign. Renamed INS Haifa. Was decommissioned in 1968 and sunk as a target ship after being hit by a Gabriel missile.
