BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- Hezbollah sent an unmanned reconnaissance plane over Israeli airspace Sunday, the Lebanon-based group and the Israeli military said.

"This morning an Iranian UAV [unmanned air vehicle] operated by the Hezbollah terror organization infiltrated into Israel over the western Galilee," the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

"This incident is a part of the terrorist activity carried out by the Hezbollah terrorist organization with the support of Iran and Syria and under the auspices of Lebanon, with the aim of targeting Israeli citizens."

The United States also considers Hezbollah a terrorist organization. The group has claimed responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks against civilians.

Hezbollah says its primary aim is to drive all Israeli forces out of Lebanon -- including the prevention of Israeli aerial maneuvers over Lebanon.

In a statement released in Beirut, Hezbollah said Sunday's flight was "in line with the natural retaliation for the continuous violations of the Lebanese airspace" by Israel.

The plane flew as far as the Israeli coastal town of Nahariya, the Hezbollah statement said.

"As of this morning, the ... plane will fly in the airspace of occupied Palestine whenever the Islamic resistance sees fit, and it is a form of legitimate confrontation to the Zionist violations of Lebanese sovereignty."

The IDF said the aerial maneuver was "further evidence of the lack of control of the Lebanese government of activities carried out from within its territory, something which may cause harm to Lebanon and its citizens.

"The state of Israel views gravely any infiltration into its sovereign territory from the air, sea or by land, and will act to ensure the security of its citizens

This is actually totally false, and you can see the propaganda system of the pro Zionists working well here. Hezbollah has never claimed responsibility for any attacks on civilians, and in fact only has targeted military infrastructure of the enemy. This is why the Europeans don’t consider Hezbollah a terrorist organisation, but rather a group who took up arms to expel the Israeli invaders from their land!

But its rather very nice to see the Israelis getting a taste of their own medicine. If its ok for the Israelis to violate the Lebanese airspace, then Hezbollah has every right to do the same to the Israelis!
But I suspect that Iran is actually doing this as a means of gathering intelligence on the Israelis. Even the most basic Iranian UAVs have allot of filming and photographic and on board computers which provide live video feed on the positions of the enemy!

Hezbollah Sent Iranian-Made Drone Plane Over Israel Airspace And Returned Home Safe.


BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hezbollah sent a reconnaissance drone into Israeli territory over northern Jewish settlements Sunday in the first hostile aerial incursion from Lebanon since a hang glider attack 17 years ago killed six soldiers.


The militant Islamic group said that the flight was in response to repeated Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace and that it reached Israel's northern coastal city of Nahariya on the border before returning to base.


It was unclear if the drone was a homemade, makeshift aircraft or bought from abroad. Hezbollah did not describe its capabilities, say how many it had or provide further details, but promised there would be more flights.


Israel claimed the craft was Iranian-made, and the army confirmed that it penetrated Israeli airspace early Sunday and flew over western Galilee.


In a statement faxed to The Associated Press, Hezbollah said a reconnaissance drone of the Islamic Resistance, the group's military wing, carried out its first flights over "occupied northern Palestine, flying over several Zionist settlements, reaching the coastal settlement of Nahariya and returning safely to its base."


The flight was believed to be the first hostile aerial incursion from Lebanon into Israel by guerrillas since Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command members sailed over in 1987 on a hang glider and killed six soldiers before being shot dead.


"This qualitative and new achievement by the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon comes as part of a natural response to the Zionist enemy's repeated and permanent violations of Lebanese airspace," a Hezbollah statement said.


Israel's army described the flight as evidence of Lebanon's lack of control within its territory and said "Israel views gravely any infiltration into its sovereign territory from the air, sea or by land, and will act to ensure the security of its citizens."


"This incident is part of the terrorist activity carried out by the Hezbollah terrorist organization with the support of Iran and Syria under the auspices of Lebanon, with the aim of targeting Israeli citizens," the army statement said.


Hezbollah pledged more such flyovers, saying they would be made "whenever the resistance wants" to counter "Zionist violations and attacks on Lebanese sovereignty."


Since Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in May 2000, Israeli planes have frequently violated Lebanese airspace on reconnaissance missions, drawing anti-aircraft fire from the Lebanese army and Hezbollah guerrillas. Fragments of exploding shells have often fallen on Israeli border communities, causing panic and drawing warnings from Israel.


In recent years, Israeli officials have accused Hezbollah of acquiring new, longer-range rockets that could strike deep into Israel.


Hezbollah, which is on the U.S. State Department list of terrorist organizations but recognized in Lebanon as a resistance group, has refused to confirm or deny the missile claims.


But the group, which is backed by Iran and Syria, is known to possess thousands of 127mm Katyusha rockets with a range of up to 17 miles.


Lebanon's own armed forces has no drones or fighter jets, with lightly armed helicopters forming the backbone of the air force.


Lebanon repeatedly has complained to the United Nations (news - web sites) about Israeli reconnaissance flights, drawing U.N. responses of concern and calls to stop them. Last month, Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah warned his group was adopting a new strategy to confront Israeli warplanes in Lebanese airspace — but didn't sound entirely confident about how well it would work.


"We will try to impose a new strategy but whether we succeed in preventing the air violations or not, we will give a try," he said at an Oct. 29 Hezbollah rally.

UN urges calm on Lebanon border


The United Nations has said it is concerned about rising tension on the border between Israel and Lebanon.
The UN secretary general's envoy in southern Lebanon, Staffan de Mistura, said he had urged Beirut to exercise better control over its frontier.

Israel has intensified its over-flights of Lebanon - last week a Katyusha rocket was fired into Israel.

In the latest incident, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said it sent a drone flying over northern Israel.

The drone apparently took Israel by surprise.

On Sunday, it crossed Lebanon's border with Israel, flew past the Israeli army's air defences, and kept going for 9km (six miles) until the Israeli coastal town of Nahariya.

According to a statement from Hezbollah - the Shia guerrilla movement - the drone's mission lasted 20 minutes and the vehicle returned safely to base.

It is the first time Hezbollah had used a drone.

Until Sunday it was unknown that the guerrilla movement had such planes.

Hezbollah did not give details about the capabilities of its unmanned reconnaissance plane, or say whether it had more than one.

But the group said there would be more such over-flights, which it said was a legitimate way to confront the Zionist violations of Lebanon's sovereignty.

Israeli army 'embarrassed'

The Israeli army has said it believes Hezbollah was using an Iranian-made drone.

The incident was seized upon by the Israeli press. Several newspapers carried the story on their front page, saying the Israeli army had been embarrassed by this serious air breach.

The Israeli media criticised the army for failing to anticipate this new Hezbollah tactic, and warned that next time the drone could be carrying a bomb.

But Lebanon's Information Minister, Eli Ferzli, said Hezbollah had resorted to using a drone because Israel was not responding to international pressure to put an end to its over-flights of Lebanon.
