personally, i would advocate a fair, independent trial at an international court, that would prosecute Sharon for the war crimes and crimes against humanity which he was involved in, ordered or otherwise supervized.
attempts in this sense have already been made, and the campaign continues.

I think a Belgian court recently threw out the charges against Sharon. If you want to charge Sharon with felony crimes then that would be very difficult IMHO; the USA does not recognise the ICC and I am almost certain no Israeli court would charge him. That leaves the various Arab courts, and unless an Arab secret service manages to kidnap him (i.e. similar to Mossad tactics, which I don't think is within their abilities) and send him to Saudi Arabia, I don't know how he could be successfully procecuted.

of course that's all true. but an independent court still appears to me as the most adequate means to do justice, in this case. perhaps if public pressures increased, western governments would have to rethink some of the unconditional backing which they grant to Sharon.

The reason Sharon became PM of Israel is that he is a rightwing PM.
Israelis were sick of Arafat who has delt with many different Israeli PM left wing and right, but Arafat was scared to make a commitment as it would mean he would loose power as he is a militant leader not a democratic.
Israel VOTED in (something that isnt too common in the middle east) because he is a strong, ex army and not scared to do things to protect his people.

Am I right to assume you believe an independant court's role, in this case, is to present damning evidence as a means to embarass Ariel Sharon? If so, then wouldn't a civil lawsuit fulfill this role? Furthermore, should a lawsuit prove successful, would you support nationalising Israeli government assets in the country of trial as a means to pay compensation?

"Unfortunately he is too moderate."
He's a murderous fascist. Only by the standards of the people of Israel could he be considered a moderate.
Israel has no fear of a military defeat. What they need to be afraid of is the continual decline in their image as an ethical nation. No one believes that anymore, not even the US pols who shill for them. The Israelis think military power is an end unto itself. What they fail to appreciate is they've become identified as oppressors by most free thinking western nations. They think it doesn't matter. It matters. A great deal.
