Great point, what I think is an even greater testament to the movie is the fact that we would find it realistic without any of us ever really seeing a cannon battle! We are so drawn into the film we believe what it is showing us as fact. Granted there was extensive research done, but it is definitely intriguing to think what did a cannon battle actually look like? Another great thing I didn't mention was how cool the action scenes were. Have you ever seen another movie where destroying wood is so entertaining? They do not cheapen it by having limbs flying around, but rather the ship takes on a character of its own and we feel the ships pain as it gets torn apart.
