I watched one of those TLC shows that compares current film to actual events in history. While the film makers were very accuarte in their deptiction of sea-going life, one aspect they failed to accurately represent was the amount of disease and infection that was prevelant on those ships. The large majority of crewmembers died not from gunshot or cannon blast, but from infection of their wounds. Sterilization was not discovered as important until after the American civil war. It is hard to believe that they would be able to perform skull suregry on someone and implant a foreign object without infection setting in. But oh well. Still an awesome experience. |
