Good question. I never thought about it but i just assumed that they had all the necessary parts on board. I would assume that preparedness was a big part of sailing the open seas and I would also assume that fouled rigging and broken masts were a big part of sailing (especially for military ships), so I just assumed that all the extra parts, ropes, wood etc. was kept on board.
