I just want some tips/advice on knocking my opponent...

I have taken basic boxing lessons in the past, so I know how to hold my own and my overhand-right is my strength...

Anyone???

P.S.

I'm 5 inches taller than my opponent, how can I use this to my advantage??? How Can I throw a stronger Jab as well??

By the Way, This is a safe fight, because we will have gloves, and adult supervisors, when i say "barenuckle" i mean extremely thin sparring gloves, so we call it barenuckle... Thanks.

as u r a gud 5 inches taller use ur added arm length to keep him away from u, just keep jabbin mainly.

to throw a good power jab push of from ur back leg, i little like a lunge but be certain ur head is out the way if he comes in with a punch as well, or if u cant that rite wen he attacks u and is movin in for a punch hit him then as this will add power from ur own arm and his own bein used against him eg if u way 11st and he lunges in and u hit with a powerful punch when hes in motion it be the same as hittin him with 14-15st punch.

another gud point is when u throw a combo eg one two make it a three punch combo, try and finish off on a jab or left arm (if ur orthodox boxer) coz if finish on ur right ur spuare on with the other boxer leavin u open and a bigger target.

gud luck neway

YOU SHOULD USE THE JAB
KEEP THE JAB IN HIS FACE
THEN AFTER YOU DO THAT THROW THE RIGHT HAND

May 25 2004, 8:23 PM

c, i have a match tomorrow against a guy thats a lil bigger then me and 5 inches taller. so, basically, i plan to thro 3 punch combos, maybe 4 if i can get that off, but since hes 6 2' and im 5 10' (maybe its a 4 inch diff.) im going to b making sure to get those stomach jabs off! so, watch out for alot of those, and after i disable him with my stomach/kidney blows, ill make sure to pop him in the chin, to try to get the knock out. so uh, take what im doing, and think that he will try the same, cuse these taller guys like u are pron for alot of stomach shots, i hope this helps, and good luck. email me if u want and tell me how it ends up.

What we do in hockey is...

May 26 2004, 4:31 PM

Well, I'm a hockey player, and I don't know whether this is any good for boxing or not, but when we're up against someone taller, we try to get in as close as possible as to minimize their reach. the thing most shorter guys do is grab his jersey, pull themselves in with their left hand, and start going balls out on the chin. I dunno if this will help you with your boxing match or not, but I'm just saying it may help to take away his reach.

Being the shorter man learning how to fight taller fighters can be hard at 1st. learning how you can cut the ring should be your 1st training goal. Force him into tight situations. Don't let him walk or lead you back or forward around the ring like a dog.
Everytime you see him throw him jab watch it closely watch him jab, I bet you he has some trait that will give him away just before he throws it, most amateurs do. Even if he doesn’t get to know the line his jab takes.

Stage 1- Try drift in & out of range of the jab right on its boundary range, tease him into throwing it to often at mid air & when he throws it make him miss & hit air, make him doubt his range, make him doubt his timing, make him doubt his number one weapon! Basically give him a @#%$ start.

If he knows most his jabs don't connect he'll slow down the volume. They say it takes twice the energy to throw & miss than it does to throw & connect he's not going to want to tire himself out either.

Stage 2- When the volume of jabs drops off a bit go in FAST do your business & leave. Use your jab to get in close. In & out, 2-6 punches each time then gone. Try not to back up straight, leave on an angle & stright away start looking for the next angle of attack. And don't go to far. Always stay on his doorstep pressuring him.
And footwork keep it wide that way you can move fast & short. Make yourself appear shorter than you are. Work under his punches. With your height fight a Basic expansion & contraction way of fighting. Contract on the defence (short). Expand on the offence (tall). Practicing ducking & slipping inside with overhand-rights & slipping outside his jab while simultaneously throwing yours inside his all the way to his chops (orthodox vs. orthodox).

Stage 3- If there’s a situation where he looks more tired than you are... pressure pressure pressure! Rip him apart from the in inside, this means brawl time if you can get in close successfully.. Work the body hard!, not so much volume wise, but hard single punches. If he knows these hard body bombs hurt he'll skink himself when you go at the body & kinda crunch the abs a bit for protection in turn making him nice & short for a killer left hook. When doing this try stay away from his right hand, chance are he uses this as a get out of jail free card. Fight the jab & only the jab if you can.

P.S. All this is extremely opinionated comments. I’m 6'1, 78kg & fight alot of shorter opponents. These are tactics that really interfere with my style of jab & move.

also are some effective combo’s for targeting taller fighters.

1.) Left jab, right cross, left hook head, left hook body (hooks reversible)

2. Left jab, right body hook, left hook head, right uppercut.

It might also be worth learning bop & weave techniques & later progressively down the track Peek-a-boo &/or rolling.

You also asked "How Can I throw a stronger Jab as well??"

Plant your feet will give you more power but on the flipside decrease you foot speed.

Make sure your pulling back your alternate shoulder all the way back when you throw it.
Some advanced tactics of tweaking out more power can be twisting the lead foot inwards on your toes. For long jabs you can also try twisting your jab a further 30 degrees past horizontal, this will inturn turn your shoulder up for defence, so tuck your chin in behind it. This way of jabbing feels awkward at 1st but you adapt after awhile & until it feels natural.. Once you learn it you'll never go back. I don't exactly know how it gives you more power but it does.. I guess it's just body mechanics at it's best. You can use this method of punching for right cross's & right straights aswell.

Plyometric workouts are also a good power booster. Medicine balls, clap push up's etc. Explosive fast twitch movements
