How to start?

There are absolutely no places to get training for boxing and whatnot in my town. The closest place that has training facilities is 5 hours away. I was wondering if its possible to train myself, and if not, which direction do I go in? Do I get videos or something?

I've been told by everyone that I fight like a boxer. I don't lose my cool when I get hit and I wait for oppurtunities and stuff. I love the thrill of fighting and watch boxing and stuff all the time, I'm enthusiastic about joining, I just don't know where to begin.

you can start training yourself by jogging, lifting, weights, crunches, punching bag, and jumping rope. that is what i do. i'm 13 years old.i have been doin this since grade 3. i can say i'm in very good shape. i don't have a six pack yet but i'm working on it. start by joggin 1/2 a mile and lifting 8 pounds and curling 15. after move up to lifting 10 and curling 20. start with 30 crunches then move up to 70. punching bag, start at punching it 200 times with each arm then move up to 500. i will tell you about a great ab workout that someone told me to do after you try what i told you it works great.

I don't need to get into shape its the technique I want to learn. I play AAA hockey and workout every second day. I have a personal trainer for fitness/hockey, but I need to learn the technique of boxing (for example, punches, combo's, what to do in certain situations, etc.).

ok a little help here?

May 22 2004, 4:03 PM

OK, I've been helping you guys out when you asked about core conditioning, all I'm asking for right now is a little help in return. This means a lot to me because I won't be able to start boxing if someone doesn't tell me.

Technique

May 24 2004, 6:04 PM

I just need to know how I can learn the technique of boxing without going to a club or something. we dont have one here so i have to teach myself. any good videos or something i can get? week-long camps in the summer with guys that will teach you? stuff like that.

Re: Technique

May 25 2004, 12:49 PM

start with the basic punching bag and the speed bag. the punching bag will strengthen your punches and the speed bag will give cooridination and quikness.keep boxing against one of your friends. do some jump rope to get your foot work in gear. and keep doing those ab excericices you told me about (by the way its really working). jog every day to every second day. once you can master the the speed bag then your are probably ready for boxing. also do some shadow boxing. what i mean by that is imagine there is someone infront of you and pretend your beating the sh** out of him. do some combos and move your feet. moving your feet is very important.
if you do all that you will become a good boxer. hope that helps. maybe you should watch a few Rocky Balboa movies do get some more excerices and some punching tehcniques. even thought it's just a movie you can still learn some something.

Where do you live?

August 3 2004, 5:54 AM

Nathen, im pretty sure i can find a gym thats closer than 5 hours. So i need to know the city and state you live in...

Second, watching rocky movies will teach you nothing. Those are scripted fights, and nobody just lets people jab their head to death.

The first thing we learn in my gym is how to move foward while staying on balance. keep your hands up, and depending on if your right or left handed, you always "drive off the back foot". You can actually practice this on ice skates. if your right handed, get into your stance (with your left foot in front). and just push off with the right foot. Dont worry about the left foot, because thats used to shift directions (piviots, angles). get that right foot powerful.

And tell me your location so i can find you a USA licensed boxing gym.

troy i live in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. if you figure you can't find a gym go hard but theres none, its a ****ty little oil town, nothing here for kids.

and rm, i dont wanna burst the bubble but 2 years does mean a lot in teens. when its a 25 yr old and a 27 yr old not as much, but the extra 2 years on a 13 year old makes a huge difference.

Found something!!

August 9 2004, 7:49 AM

There are only two places that are close to you unless you want to go to Edmonton...

Slave Lake, Slave Lake Boxing Club, Lee Tanghe, 403-849-4731

Or this might be as close...

Bonnyville, KA Boxing, Lorna Jacobs, 780-826-7738, Po Box 6877 Stn Main, Bonnyville, AB, T9N 2H3

Bonnyville, Bonnyville Boxing Club, Ray Kahanyshyn, 780-826-5702, Po Box 6234 Stn Main, Bonnyville, AB, T9N 2G8

One thing is for sure, your way up there!

Re: slave lake is closer

August 9 2004, 10:51 AM

slave lake is about as nathan said 3 1/2 hours away or maybe even more. so i will try and go to the kick boxing club in hamilton and see what i can get. there are one or two boxing clubs in hamilton but that is where all the low life bums hang out. and these clubs believe it or not are run by the Mafia. so i don't think i want to go there. hey Troy let's call a truce and stop bickering about what technique trains the best. i did post one little comment that makes a little sense on What are my chances.

Here is some real info

August 17 2004, 1:45 PM

I been reading some posts on this site just for a few hours and some of them I couldn't even believe. Some questions about boxing are so stupid that I don't understand how these people even box. No offense and there is no specific stupid comments on these posts. I just thought maybe I could put some info in here because I am a very experienced boxer. I am 21 years old and have been a fighter since I could first walk. My dad was a fighter and he taught me everything. After about 18 years of boxing I think I am pretty experienced. So here is what I do when I condition. Monday, Wednesday, Friday will consist of boxing conditioning; Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday will consist of strength training and speed work.
MONDAY/WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY
Warm-up/Boxer's Bounce - 2 minutes
Stretch - 10-15 minutes
Mirror Training (just practice perfect form on punches and combos) - 10 minutes
Shadow Boxing - 6 rounds of 3 minutes
Heavy Bag - 12 rounds of 3 minutes
Speed Bag - 8 rounds of 3 minutes
Jump Rope - 6 rounds of 3 minutes
Punch out drills (choose dumbbells with a weight that best suits you and stand in your fighting stance) - Throw as many jabs and straights as you can until you physically can't
TUEDAY/THURSDAY/SATURDAY
Sparring - if you have the opportunity to spar, do it. Most experts say box with someone on your own level, I always got faster and stronger sparring with someone who is a little better. If you have 2 years experience, fight someone with 4 years experience.
Weightlifting - go to the gym or wherever and do 6 sets of 10 for every muscle moving ballistically through all the movements, meaning every exercise you do should be done as fast as possible. When training for speed 10 reps is the best way, when training for power 3 to 6 does real good.
Running - run 2-5 miles
Sprinting - do 12- 15 sets of 100 meter sprints then do 6 sets of 200 meter sprints. Each time you're done your first 100 or 200 meter sprint rest for 30 seconds and start running
1-2-1-2 drills - take a 3-6 pound dumbell and throw jab then cross for 20 punches with each hand then repeat 3 times
2-3-2-3 drills - same as above except you're throwing straight and hook
4-3-4-3 drills - same as above except you're throwing uppercut and hook

Abs are done daily. Use your own disgression on this. Make sure to work upper, lower, and obliques, and even the transverse abdominus (this is done by laying down on the floor and sucking in your stomach and holding it in for 30-45 seconds.)

There are more things I do when I condition for a fight but there is no need to overload, there is enough here as it is. Be warned, this isn't for the feint of heart. My energy and stamina and will and dedication are higher than most people I have ever met. Do not be discouraged if you cannot keep up with all this. Just always give it your all and KEEP SWINGIN!!

Post any questions about this or any specific questions and I will give you all the best information you could ask for!
