I found this site, and wow it amazes me. I have never heard such ignorace from posters on a boxing forum... I bet barely anybody has even been in a boxing ring, and probably nobody has ever had a sanctioned fight. Just wondering if any body has... And if so who are you licensed by?

Really

July 30 2004, 3:45 PM

I say this in the fullest reguard to the sport. I am a member the The Gary Police Athletic League, and am currently an amateur boxer. I am licensed through USA boxing, and have had 4 open division fights.

I am not trying to tell people that they cant post, but i have seen allot of rude/incorrect **** being posted. Basicly i just wanted to know who really has competed and offer assistance to those who would like to know how.

It is very hard to find places that are serious.

So if anybody is serious about boxing, and not talking about it... Tell me the area you live in and i can find the closest gym to you throughout the US.

Sorry to get off on the wrong foot, but dont get so damn defensive either!

???

August 2 2004, 7:24 AM

But it isnt childish to give incorrect advice to people. You guys can train and do the "boxing workout" till your face turns blue. In the end, it will not make you a better boxer. And isnt that what this forum is about??? If you want to get fit, go to ballys, hitting a speed bag and jumping rope have no function for boxing unless they are combined with proper training from an experienced coach, combined with proper sparring.

So it seems that you guys just want to play boxing. Just like you play hockey, baseball, basketball, and football. You dont play boxing... You fight. I have tried to offer assistance for anybody who really wants to take this sport seriously... And there have been no replys on that front. It seems that most of the posters are just interested in how to use a speed bag, and show off to their friends that they can hit a freakin leather ball.

I feel that people who talk about training for boxing, want to get in shape by hitting bags, have no real purpose discussing the sport that i love.

If you wanna get in shape, try tae bo, or pilaties... But dont talk about boxing, you have no right to!

MY OPINION

April 17 2006, 6:13 AM

I kno this is a slightly late reply, but i was reading this message forum and i thought id like to share my views, i used to box a few years ago, i wasnt brilliant, but i wasnt bad, but at the end of the day i gave it my best shot and iv gotta say iv got respect for any body who climbs in the ring, i have to disagree with ???, i think if somebody wants to give boxing training a go for fitness or whatever reason to give it a go, i often try to encourage people who ask me about starting boxing training to give it a shot, you are better off training in a proper gym with a good coach, but if all you have got is a heavy bag at home, then put your gloves n take it from there,i still have a heavy bag but theres no replacement for proper sparring, real bag work instructed by somebody who's been involved in boxing for years, if anybody is considering giving boxing a go, even if u just want to train, then go for it. And this is suppost to be a forum for sharing information and giving advice, lets try to keep it that way, if anybody wants any further advice then u can email me, LOONYTOON2005@MSN.COM, (put the subject as boxing) i can try and pass on my advice to anybody willing to learn, i dont know everything, but you welcome to ask my advice, train hard folks, keep the faith.

The English Boxing Scene

August 2 2004, 12:20 PM

It is allot easier to fight in England then in the US. I wish i lived in London, New York, or Los Angels. They are very good fighting cities where there is an overabundance of trainers.

Its kinda hard here to find gyms that are deep enough in the sport to be licensed. I am lucky to have a gym close to me.

I still am asking the question. Are there any US citizens who want to get started in this sport??? Or are you just gonna talk about training? If you guys truely want to be boxers, reply and tell me your location. What you learn off this forum will be nothing compared to what a certified coach will teach you.

There are just to many variables. You must learn balance, how to throw punches using your body, and how to move in a ring. Those are the first things i was taught. AFter that, you can begin to develope your style once you auctually know how to throw a punch, and learn to move correctly.

For everybody who didnt get it... Who wants to Box??????????????????????

Talk is cheap

August 2 2004, 2:28 PM

I dont think you will be able to box in the US with a "passport to box". In fact, you cant fight a sactioned fight unless you are licensed under USA boxing. You cant enter golden gloves, silver gloves, junior olympics, Ringside national tournament, or USBA open division championships without a certified trainer (by usa boxing), and your passport (book).

In order to obtain your passport, you will have to join a gym, or shell out $300 to register your own boxing club. But in order to do that, you must also have a certified trainer as part of that club.

Bottom line is you cant compete unless you have your book. You cant obtain your book unless you belong to some sort of club.

Second of all, since you train yourself, how much sparring do you do a week? Hitting a heavy bag wont do squat for you in an actual sanctioned boxing match.

Allow me to inform you of my gym schedule, which does not include strength and condition training.

5:30 pm- 15 various stretches and warmups. Warmups are essential in getting the oxygen into your muscles to prevent injury.

Warmups are followed by shadow boxing for 4 rounds 3 min a round with 30 seconds rest. This is all supervised by my trainer John Taylor, who has trained countless national amateur champions, and 2 world champions.

Now if its a monday wednesday or a friday, i spar usually 4-5 rounds. And will shadow box for 5-8 rounds depending on time.

If its Tuesday or Thursday, i do 4 rounds on the heavy bag, 4 on the double end bag, 4 on the speed bag, and 10 rounds workin with another trainer, using hand targets.

Next i will jumprope for 3 rounds.

7:00 pm- we warm down doing 5 different stretches. And all gather in the middle of the ring to pray.

All is supervised, and am being constantly reminded not to be so wide, extend all of my punches, and other various remarks from a man who has been in the business for almost 60 years...

Its not that i dont believe that you are sucessful training yourself, what do you have to show for it but talk. You say you have speed and power, but how can you prove that??? Have you ever fought in a ring??? Have you even sparred before.

TALK IS CHEAP!!!!!!

August 3 2004, 2:31 PM

All you seem to talk about is allot of BS. Rocky movies help boxing, speed bag training is very important, and continuious talk of kicking other peoples ass. im 21 years old. im 5'10 160lbs. I have 14 total amateur fights, 4 open divison. I am undefeated in all fights and have 11 RSC's. Do you know what a RSC is? Of course not, because you know nothing about boxing. NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as physical numbers are concerned, i max bench press 325lbs, military press 200lbs, curl 150lbs, squat 460lbs, and dead lift 520lbs. I run 1 mile a week with a 100lbs sand bag 4x400. Have an intraval sprint training twice a week to go with an 8 mile run twice a week. But talk is cheap. You have the same amount of right to believe me then i do you. The only difference is i can tell you about boxing. You can tell me about Rocky 1-5.

So do yourself a favor, quit talking about a subject you have no knowledge about. You might have been able to fool others with your "rocky talk", but come on. The day you step into a gym, you will totally see the difference.

August 4 2004, 1:33 AM

i'm only 13 and i run longer distances than you. i'm also 5 pounds heavier. and a solid tank of muscle. and not all the stuff you can get off rocky is not crap. some of the training excercices and punches can actually come in handy.

Solid tank of muscle huh??

August 4 2004, 6:09 AM

Like i was saying, if you knew anything about boxing, you would know there is no reason to run more then 8 miles at a time. And you would know that distance running is not as effective as interval sprint training. Boxing is an anarobic sport that requires you to have frequent bursts of energy. Running at a set pace does little to help.

As far as you being a tank, the weights you work out with are 1/5 of what i use. With you being 5 pounds heavier, what kind of a tank are you??? A jelly one? Im allot stronger then you.

But my super-advantage of power is not the issue, its my experience level. I have fought in downtown chicago. I have fought in front of 1000 people. ive been interviewed on tv, been in the paper, and know how to progress to become a professional.

Look boy, i dont want to fight with you... In fact, you need to find a gym. So, tell me where you are located, and ill find you the closest gym. The reason i post is to help people with BOXING... Your going about it all wrong. Let me help you!

August 4 2004, 11:44 PM

I was hoping that someone could help me. I saw Troy on this message board and i was hoping you could help me find a good boxing gym around my area. I have messed around with my freinds and boxing. But i want to take it further. Im a very competative person. Volleyball basketball track, ect it isnt doing it for me anymore. I am determined to do this. Not many people are with me when i say that i want to box. But i want to become something. I have the drive to do something great. So if you could just help me out a little, i would be very appreciative. I live in ALbany Oregon.

talk is cheap

April 7 2006, 8:21 AM

Troy, my understanding is that you are very proud of the boxing info that you know and do.
Let me tell you about me: First off since the day I was born I was born into a boxing family. (My father is a pro reff)
when I was 12 I wanted to learn how to fight and my father put me in a boxing gym.
11 years later I still box, train, and coach at my own boxing gym.
I have had over 260 fights, won golden gloves, Jr olympics, nationals(made it all the way from usa to russia where I won silver), all the small tournaments within my area, empire state games...etc. The list goes on.
Also, coming out of my boxing gym nothing but pretty much pros. We have a few Amatures left. Hasim Rahman actually was training at my gym for his fight that was in Atlantic City against Jones last month.
So well in answer to your first question does anyone know anthing about boxing: YES I do
and to your talk is cheap ordeal, we get it you work hard and you are a big strong man, but when you turn pro then maybe I might have some interest in what you tell me.

August 8 2004, 8:29 AM

ok i just got back from england and troy, ur a f**king joke. obviously your ego has gotten the best of you because you box so you figure you're king $#i+ or something.

what exactly do you mean by "you don't just play boxing the way you play hockey" are you ****ing kidding me? the reason i havent posted in a week was because i was at a hockey camp. 14 hours a day, a 10 minute break for every 1.5 hours, and eventually you get an hour lunch break, puking your guts up every day cuz ur working your ass off, id love to see a boxer try it.

you can think what you want about boxing, but football, hockey, rugby, etc, are much more physically demanding. when a 50 yr old man can become heavyweight champion of the world, you can't even compare it to hockey where 35-40 is over the hill. i cant speak for the other sports, but i know hockey is a hell of a lot harder than boxing, u dont just "play" it toolbox.

oh ya, im 15, and my workouts are 5 times as hard as yours, but i guess thats got nothing to do with the fact that i train for hockey and u train for boxing.

ps. since your such an experienced boxer and whatever you'd know your max bench doesn't mean a whole lot, cuz there aren't many boxers you're going to knock out in one punch, so what really matters is the amount u can lift in 3 sets, 20 reps a set.

It never stops, ever...

August 8 2004, 5:35 PM

This has to be the only site in the world that a 15 yr old hockey player, who has yet to have one amateur fight, and a 13 yr old movie fanatic can criticize a person with years of experience under his belt...

Boxing is an anaerobic sport. Plain and simple. You see, when you lift lighter weights with more reps, it will build muscles that require less oxygen to perform. Thats what you call slow twitch muscle fiber.
Now what exactly does slow twitch muscle fiber attribute to??? Endurance, and thats it...

Power is the combination of speed and strength. We live in a day where sports science has advanced 10 fold to when fighters such as Ray Robinson, and Ali trained. We now have a 350lb defensive tackle who can run the 40 in under 4.5 seconds... How do you think he became so damn fast????

Anarobic exercise requires you to use 80% of the oxygen you consume... What will eventually happen is lactic acid will form, and your muscles will naturally fatigue... This is the best way to become more powerful and explosive... Anaerobic over aerobic anyday of the week... Lifting heavy weights (70-90% of your max) is called anarobic, because you can only do so many, before lactic burn... Sprinting is another anaerobic exercise... You will burn out sprinting a 400, but could pace yourself over a mile. Which is more benificial???

Now i have heard the echo's of Hypertrophey training... Yet it seems we are getting a little carried away... Why would you bring such an advanced training technique into the picture when you have not even competed yet??? Hypertrophey training is very complex, and if not performed correctly, can lead to injury...

Why dont you boys learn how to freakin fight first, and then maybe you can give advice on how to train... It seems that you have nothing but opinions to offer, when i have facts and experience in the sport...

you are such an idiot

August 8 2004, 7:02 PM

i can't believe you're sitting their telling me this ****.

where did i say i havent boxed yet? i said i USED to box, i boxed for 3 years straight in Newfoundland, where some of the toughest fighters in Canada come from.

and i know the difference between ****ing endurance lifting and explosive power lifting and hypertrophy. whats funny is how you say hypertrophy is too advanced for me to talk about it, when in reality its what you should start off with, just to get your body used to lifting weights. but hey i dont know anything ive just had a personal weight trainer for the last 2 years.

and since your little mind can't comprehend why i said "it doesn't matter what your max bench is," its because you could be a one round fighter. if you went out and worked your max bench every day, did it once, and then that was your workout for your pectorals, you'd be ****ing useless. you have to be able to hit over and over again, not just throw a punch and hope to god his head falls off.

August 11 2004, 6:16 PM

hahaha, ya, ive never taken a full power punch huh? some goon spins you around and haymaker's you bareknuckle, I've had that happen, got back up and gave 'er, I don't think I'd ever take a hit like that in boxing, for a few good reasons

1. I'd be facing the guy
2. I'd be ready to take a punch
3. He'd be wearing gloves

Trust me, you get hit open ice in hockey, and it'll hurt a hell of a lot more than getting punched by george foreman.

NHLers skate up to 60km an hour. Now when you're a forward(who is generally about 5'10 to 6'3, 180 to 220 pounds), and you're skating 60km an hour with the puck, and some defenseman (who is generally at LEAST 6ft, 220 pounds), is skating 60km an hour and hits you, the results a hell of a lot more devastating than taking 10 straight uppercuts.

Let's not forget the fact that you're going full out on the ice for a full minute (then off for a minute), even if u don't have the puck, you're fighting with some other guy (probably bigger than you), to get open for a pass. There aren't two people circling around a bit to recooperate before they go in for another sprint of punches.

What you don't realise about hockey, is that it is just as full out and full fledged contact as rugby, but you're dragging around 20-30 pounds of wet equipment as well.

OHHHH YEAAAAH, let's not forget that NHLers play at LEAST 82 games a year (thats the regular season, playoffs are up to another 28 games), they play every 2 days. How many fights does a successful, professional boxer go for in a year? 1-3?

you see i actually don't play hockey. but i've seen them hockey players train. and i have seen those hockey players fight on the ice. just think of it this way. hockey should actually be called ice boxing because of all the fights and sh** that goes on.

alright "rm422 and nathan go to hell," or should i just call you "tough guy who hasn't got any balls," you can sit there and say "boxing is harder! boxing is harder! boo ****ing hoo I need a bottle" but if you can't argue any ****ing points as to WHY its harder, then its time to sit down, but hey thanks for coming out.

oh ya, i do play hockey you retard, so i can speak from experience about which is harder, unlike you, who probably hasn't even seen a hockey game.

scroll down to the pic on this page, and tell me the last time you saw a boxer in that condition: http://www.ubersite.com/m/32313

what is everyone's problem?

August 18 2004, 5:58 AM

First off Nathan let me just say if you think that any sport is more physically demanding than boxing then you're a damn fool. I'm not calling you a fool or anything so don't misunderstand but you're thinking is very foolish. Hockey and football are physically demanding, no doubt. But ask a football player or a hockey player if he thinks his training camp is more difficult and physically demanding than boxing. See I don't know how you train or how anybody else trains but it seems like no one knows that much about the sport. I'm not trying to sound arrogant or like an a**hole, but I'm a fighter and I know what it takes to be a good fighter. Regardless of what anyone says, not everyone can box, everyone thinks they can or wants to but some just can't. Some of us are born with a killer instinct and some of us are not. If you guys were true fighters you wouldn't be arguin over who has the best fighting city or who the better boxer is. Meet up, get in the ring and f*****g box. I came on this forum looking for some serious boxers that are in the amateurs so I could trade info and maybe train with them, but all I'm seein is wannabe fighters who think they're fighters sayin that they're the best fighters. I would like to see one of you amazing "boxers" who are solid and strong as steel go 12 rounds with me, then you'll know what steel feels like. Stop insulting each other and start helping each other. This forum sucks!

Re: what is everyone's problem?

August 18 2004, 11:47 AM

Look here little man, I wasn't saying anyone on this forum sucks I was sayin the posts suck don't get all defensive. Everyone here is a boxer or interested in boxing so all I was saying was that everyone should help each other instead of arguing and insulting each other. I read some of your posts and your talking all this trash to boxers who are more experienced than you. AND you said you can learn technique from Rocky movies!!!! Come on my man think before you write. Rocky 1-5 are some of my favorite movies of all time, but that's just what they are, MOVIES! The only thing you can learn from them is that Sylvester Stallone obviously worked hard to get that cut and thats it. Don't go telin me that I suck, because I been boxing since before you were born. The day I took my first steps as a baby, I started boxing, think about that before you tell me I suck. You're a 13 year old kid and I have no doubt that you're big for your age and that you train nice and hard, but I'm bigger and I train harder. You said you've been boxing since you were 8, well I been boxing since I was 3, real boxing, not some of the bull***t that gets posted on here. If a more experienced boxer tells you something he's not arguing with you, he's telling you how it is and then you listen because he is more experienced. In fact, now that I think about it, a friend of mine lives in Rochester, NY about an hour and a half from Toronto, so we go there maybe 3 to 4 times a year and you said you live in Ontario so I'm due up to Rochester end of September, begining of October, so if you think you're so good lets set up a training session and you'll see how a real fighter trains. You can get anyone you know who boxes and I'll spar with them and you can watch, or we can spar, or we can train, or we can do all that, whatever you want. You want to train like a boxer then you gotta train with a boxer, and I'm from Philly man, the place where the greatest fighters in the world come from!

k ill settle this one

August 20 2004, 9:44 AM

I'll settle this one.

The UK has the best boxers period. Maybe not in the heavyweight division but the heavyweight division displays boxing in the worst manner possible if you ask me. you've got a bunch of goons throwing bombs at each other for 12 rounds. i don't know what anyone wants to watch it.

when it comes to featherweights, middleweights, bantam weights, etc., where skill beats strength, the UK fighters (expecially the British) kick ass.

there are also a few good korean boxers out there but for the most part they're just dirty fighters and i don't know how they get off with the **** they do.

and i boxed, and i play hockey. i was boxing and playing hockey for 2 years at the exact same time.

hockey was a hell of a lot more demanding. training for boxing was a lot of cardio and it wore you out, but you barely ever fight. in hockey, i was played 2 times a day (a practice then a game) on the weekends (including friday), travelling 2-8 hours each day of the weekend, plus practicing everyday on the weekdays. and you have no idea what kind of hell training camp is, but im not even gonna bring those up.

anyways im sick of arguing about hockey and boxing because no one even reads these posts they just ignore them and go on with **** that ive already compared.

hey people im an english pro light welter weight boxer n my record is 5 fights 5 wins n all 5 cumin by knockout and iv also played hockey as an ammeteur had quite a few fights there aswell lol, but i hav to agree that boxing is harder than hockey soz 2 all people who dont belive it but dats jus my opinion, but i do agree wiv nathan bout british boxers bein better apart from the heavy weight division, as there is hardly any boxing involved in the heavy weight division any more its basically just a bunch ov over weight blokes throwin sloppy punches at each other not caring about defense.

Re: k ill settle this one

out of football, wrestling, hockey, boxing, and kick boxing, i think hockey is the most physically demanding

but different sports require different types of muscle. for ex, football's prob the only sport where you need huge biceps. granted, in boxing you need to tone your biceps, football actually makes it a necessity.

imo, i think boxing requires the most heart and dedication. it's not easy to get back up after getting a facefull of glove. but hockey is also extremely brutal. it's common to see hockey players with bent fingures or with messed up faces. in a fight i'd put my money on a boxer for obvious reason. but i'm not gonna let you ppl believe that hockey's a pussy sport cuz it's training is more intense than any other sport.

in terms of the intenseness of the traing i would have to say
hockey > boxing > wrestling > kickboxing > football
