In the scene in the motel room when Paul Rivers bloodies his feet stepping on glass and then shoots himself in the chest, he resembles Christ. Also, his wife, Mary, with her desired in vitro fertilization, suggests the immaculate conception. I am not knowledgeable about Christian tradition-- can somebody enlighten me as to the director's and writer's purposes in using this symbolism in this movie?
