Hi, perhaps I didn't quite understand that scene but I don't think that there is any religious background. Because Jean Penn is trying to release himself from his suffering Jesus in contrast suffered to redeem the Mankind.
And he also didn't shorten his suffering.
If there is a symbolism it is a very bad one in my opinion.
