An Old Adage

"Only mediocre talents 'borrow.' Geniuses steal outright!" I don't know the source of this homily, but to me it's full of truth. Everything comes from somewhere. Nothing comes from nowhere. Musicians get their music from what they hear around them, then they work with it.

Didn't Bix, for instance, start out his cornet practice by copying every note from his ODJB records?

The immortal Mozart "stole" from EVERYBODY and EVERYTHING. He could absorb a whole style of music in a single hearing and then compose in that style.

Originality lies in the use one makes of the "stolen" material.
