Society is to blame for this not the X musicians. It isn't fair what happened and it was an injustice, but the X musicians should be the last to be blamed. They were the only ones to see artistic value in the Y musicians' work. There's no point in being an artist if you're not playing what's true to you, and if Y music is what you love and what is true to you then play it, or go home and work in a slaughterhouse.
