I've just listened to Aunt Hagar's Blues (Dixie Syncopators), Potato Head Blues (Hot Seven) and Grandpa's Spells (Hot Peppers). The Sousaphone accentuates the Down Beat and the Banjo/Guitar the softer Up Beat. Now listen to (if you can bear to) Le Harpe Street Blues (Colyer) or Too Busy (Barber) just two taken at random. Banjo, Bass and Drums thump out a strict even four to the bar. That's the difference I'm trying to illustrate that all that is bad with British Trad. Those British Rhythm Sections, well, they're so unsubtle, crude even.
