I don't hear George Johnson playing baritone on those recordings
by
I didn't notice George Johnson was listed as doubling on baritone on those recordings until you mentioned it. I listened to those 3 recordings really close again on my Fountain lp which I consider the best quality reissue since I don't have any of the original Gennett or Claxtonola 78's. I don't hear a baritone sax on any of them unless Johnson plays one way in the background in one of the ensemble passages and it is inaudible to me.
First I listened and heard no baritone sax. Then I looked in Evans and Evans for the discography listing of the personnel for those 3 titles. They are listed on pages 147,150,152,153,165. Evans and Evans lists George Johnson as only playing tenor sax on those recordings. No baritone sax.
But in that review the personnel listing has Jimmy Hartwell as playing clarinet and alto sax, George Johnson as playing clarinet, tenor sax and doubling on baritone on those 3 numbers.
If you look at the picture of the Wolverines on page 139 of Evans and Evans the picture reveals this:
It shows Jimmy Hartwell holding a clarinet and an alto sax on a stand in front of him. It shows George Johnson holding his tenor sax with a clarinet in front of him and a baritone sax on a stand between him and jimmy Hartwell.
That picture would support the instrumentation listed for the musicians in that review.
But the picture was taken at Doyle's Dancing Academy and not Gennett records.
Ok now time for some wild speculation from me. If the baritone sax doubling for George Johnson mentioned in the review is based on aural identification then on "Susie" i noticed Johnson plays some low notes on his tenor sax. A bad lp transfer like the Milestone one which is cited in the review might make a listener think the low notes played on tenor sax are a baritone sax.
Maybe there was some other previous evidence or listing of Johnson doubling on baritone sax and the reviewers just copied an earlier personnel listing.
