Is there perhaps a possibility that the incident in fact did happen, and Ruth may have disclosed the story but it was told "off the record"--or perhaps disclosed the story but then regretted it--and then requested that it not be included in the book after it was too late?
This may have been already been discussed and rejected in a previous thread but I can't recall.
