Bix as Genius

by Mike O

I know where you're coming from, Alex, but I have to question some things you wrote. Probably because of the alcohol, Bix wasn't always at his best when he recorded. And apparently he had dozens of horn players imitating the style he developed. Doesn't that make it a little difficult to say with complete certainty "Yes, that's Bix playing. No doubt about it." If such uncertainty exists, does that make Bix less of a genius? You hinted that some people think so. I can't think of too many musicians who played at genius level all the time (Heifetz, maybe).
