Rodgers & Hart - by way of MGM (circa 1948)

by Lisa Ryan

Last night I watched - in stupefied amazement - the 1948
Rodgers and Hart biopic "Words and Music" ... a film
that made NO effort whatsoever to get any period details
(or decades) right!
The 1920's looks exactly like the 1940's ... classic Rodgers & Hart
songs are ruined by garish production numbers ... Lorenz Hart's
struggles are sanitized beyond recognition, etc. etc.

Reading through reviews of the film (Bosley Crowther's 1948
review in the NY Times is hilarious) I learned that
"Richard Rodgers reportedly disliked every aspect of this film
except for the casting of Janet Leigh as his wife."
Good for Richard Rodgers - this film is a stinker!
