Great Gatsby

by Lisa Ryan

All this talk of "getting it right" has got me thinking about the
1974 version of "The Great Gatsby". I didn't like the movie very much,
but did spend 2 weeks working as an extra in the party scenes (you've seen pix
of that, Jamaica!) and one thing that was quite impressive was the attention
to period detail. All the clothes that were used in the movie were vintage, and as
far as outfitting the extras, that went for underwear too! No actual alcohol
was served on the set, of course (the champagne was 7-Up, etc.) so we all
started carrying flasks to the set, and nipping on real hooch throughout
the long nights of shooting (generally 6 pm to 6 am) ... which added a
whole other dimension of "20's realism" to the proceedings!
