Ray Lopez was another musician Tim knew-Lopez heard Bix once
Ray Lopez was another one of the musicians Tim got to know in the 1960's. Tim would go over to see him and play records and talk about early jazz. Fortunately Ray loaned some of his original pictures to Tim and Tim had negatives made of them. Tim asked Ray Lopez if he had ever heard Bix. Ray said he heard him in person once at the Arcadia Ballroom. Tim never forgot what Ray Lopez said about Bix. Ray told Tim that Bix was trying to do too much with jazz too fast. He was trying to drive it to the stars before it was ready.
To me that is a very interesting quote. Storyville magazine in 2 issues published the story of Mr. Jazz Himself or Ray Lopez's story based on letters that Ray wrote to Dick Holbrook. I have read those 2 articles very carefully and I noticed that quote about Bix from Ray Lopez is not in the articles. But then Ray Lopez was just writing his reminisces to Dick Holbrook and not answering any questions Holbrook asked him in person. Tim asked Lopez in person about hearing Bix. That quote about Bix from Ray Lopez is also in an unpublished manuscript that Doc Souchon had.
Here is one of the pictures Tim had a negative made of: Abe Lyman band.
