From "Selections from the Gutter" edited by Art Hodes and Chadwick Hansen, Universty of California Press, Berkeley, CA 1977,
These are Mezz Mezzrow's recollections, "After much trouble we [we are Mezz Mezzrow and Hugues Panassie] located Tommy Ladnier, who was upstate at a swell cafe. Hughes and I wee never so happy in all our lives. The day Tommy came to New York was a holiday at my home. I have always thought that next to Louis Armstrong, Tommy played more like King Joe Oliver than any other trumpet player I know."
