A problem

by Paul Bocciolone Strandberg

If we agree that the soloist on Alabamy Snow is Secrest (and I never thought otherwise) there is a little problem to explain the playing of the other man who takes the lead at the end. If we apply the same method as Andy Schumm did, which is that there are no instance where Bix plays in this or that way, while there are places where Secrest do so, then I would like to ask: Is there any recording where Charlie Margulies has problems to execute his first part in an arrangement? I always thought that he was one of those guys that could play anything on the trumpet with ease and that he was employed by Whiteman and others because he had this ability. The playing is rather uncontrolled, could it really be him?
