Great post, Brad. And being a huge Parker fan when "Bird" came out, I was really frustrated by the very thing you mentioned: that the "swing" band was not playing "swing" so there was no great distinction to what Parker was doing during his woodshedding period and the music style that came before. That incident with the drummer throwing the cymbal really happened. It's a shame they didn't get it right.
While I still like Charlie Parker and much of the bebop music of that period, it seems that as I get older, I find myself preferring the music of Bix and the 20's and 30's over Bird and the bebop era. The music is much happier and prettier.
