Jane Green

by Brad Kay

Kills me that Jane Green's Victor of "Sweet Georgia Brown" never saw issue, even after two sessions and six takes. It must have been spectacular, judging by the other sides she made on those two dates.

Jane was, by far, the most musical, swinging, on-pitch, articulate, least-affected girl singer in all recorded Vaudeville of the '20s. She anticipated the rise of great pop singing by ten years at least. She was to her "flapper" female songstress contemporaries what Bix was to his fellow dance-band and jazz cornetists.
