Wow-what great photos! That is indeed a cornet that Don Murray is holding in the first photo. It wouldn't be too surprising that he played a bit of cornet. His prowess on other instruments is obliquely referred to in Caldwells' diary notes. As well, other reed players in that era doubled on trumpet or cornet: Jimmy Dorsey,Don Redman and even Benny Goodman. I wonder where the photos were taken? The mark on the bottom of the photos says "Evanston, Ill." where the Northwestern Campus is located and I wonder if the photos were, in fact taken on campus. If Murray did take that cornet solo on the Trumbauer "Okeh" version of "Sugar", that would be another Bix mystery laid to rest.
