And Bix for a time appears to have played quite well when he was "under the influence," viz. "Toddlin' Blues" and "Davenport Blues," where, according to Hoagy's account, they all had had more than a few.
Featured here not long ago were some notes collected from Bix's Whiteman colleagues in which someeone (Jack Fulton?) said something to the effect that "he could play when drunk--unless he was flat on the floor." As his neurological condition worsened and he played less and less, understandably Bix seems to have lost some of that capability and the embouchure that had once been his.
