Re: Listened to SENSATION

by Nick Dellow

I'm just looking at all the possible options. I still think it could be Justin Ring, but of course I can't say for certain....and I'm not entirely comfortable in assigning that rather "modern" hand-choke cymbal work to Ring, who was "old school" (he was born in 1876). Graselli is certainly a rather obscure musician nowadays, but he may have been less so at the time, at least around New York!

Talking of Justin Ring, I have a copy of a letter that he sent to Bill Dean-Myatt in which he remembered organising OKeh sessions as Tommy Rockwell's assistant after Columbia took over OKeh, and recalled that Bix Beiderbecke "played with several orchestras", though sadly he doesn't mention anything about percussion work.
