The Dukes weren't so bad

Yes, the Doc Evans record of "When It's Sleepy Time Down South" is a beautiful rendition that deserved to be far better known then and deserves to be far better known now. But the Dukes of Dixieland were quite a good pop-jazz band who made two fine albums with Louis Armstrong. Frank Assunto sounds quite a bit like Armstrong on the ride-out to "Tiger Rag" from the Sullivan clip, and on "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" from the album "Louie and the Dukes of Dixieland" (1960), Armstrong grabs Assunto by the scruff of his neck, lifts him to the heights and makes him sound like one of the giants of jazz on their final 32-bar trumpet duet.
