The flip side

by Mark Gabrish Conlan

And here's the flip side of "Craze-Ology," a beautiful rendition of "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" with vocal by Red McKenzie, which was ignored by reissuers until Columbia put out a CD called "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" with verious records of men singing love songs to men and women singing love songs to women. This didn't have anything to do with sexual orientation: it was because music publishers refused to let singers adjust the lyrics of songs to match their gender. That's one reason why Irving Berlin advised aspiring songwriters not to use the words "he" and "she," but to use "you" and "I" instead, so either a man or a woman could sing their songs.
