"Reaching for Someone"

by Mark Gabrish Conlan

An example of Bing singing the way Bix played: the opening of his vocal on Whiteman's record of "Reaching for Someone." Instead of starting the song on a held note on the syllable "I'm" and then going downward as the written melody does, he stretches the first note into a whole-tone scale just the way Bix liked to do in his solos. Of course the record also features great solos by Tram before Bing's vocal and Bix after it!
