Where are the tenor saxophonists?

by Mark Gabrish Conlan

Why didn't Dick Melrose list anybody playing tenor sax? No big band, real or fantasy, in that period would have had just two saxophonists. My guess, based on George Simon's marvelous book "Simon Says" (in which he gathered together reviews and articles he'd written about swing "in the day" and added commentaries about them in 1970), is that a young white swing fan in 1936 would have picked Coleman Hawkins (or maybe Chu Berry) and Eddie Miller (or maybe Bud Freeman, which would have added another Bix colleague to the mix).
