It's an interesting painting to me, with a comparatively small portion of it representing what looks to be a rural-type impression of Davenport, perhaps, with a large blazing sunset in the background. But three-quarters of the painting is in darkness, and it almost seems to be overtaking the rest of what we see. I wonder if this is symbolic of the artist's perception of Bix, or perhaps just representing the fact that his lifestyle often made him a creature of the night.
