Happy 120th birthday, Tony Sbarbaro! (1897-1969)

by David Tenner

James Lincoln Collier writes in The Making of Jazz (p. 72) that "As an example of the way myths persist in jazz, in every discussion of this record [Livery Stable Blues] it has been stated that no bass drum was used because of its tendency to make the recording needle jump. H. O. Brunn, the band's biographer, says so, and so does the normally astute Rudi Blesh in the liner notes for the RCA LP reissue of the record. Nevertheless, a perfectly audible bass drum booms away throughout the record." Judge for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WojNaU4-kI
